Last week, the Royce Onsite Machining team headed to SMM Hamburg!

It was a great opportunity to meet with people working across shipping and marine engineering and discuss how our onsite machining can support vessels and critical marine equipment when repairs are needed.

From crankshaft and crankpin machining to line boring, fl**ge facing and shaft repairs, our engineers carry out precision work directly where itโ€™s needed - helping get critical machinery back into service without the disruption of removing large components from the vessel.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to speak with us at SMM Hamburg. It was great to see you there. ๐Ÿ™Œ

A repair like this would traditionally mean removing large propulsion components and sending them away for workshop machining.

For this project, that wasn't necessary. Find out how we did it... โฌ‡๏ธ

That's why the setup matters just as much as the machining itself. We use heavy-duty milling slides across a range of applications, while bespoke gantry milling frames can be designed for larger components where additional rigidity and support are required.

For press beds, machine frames and engine structures, these systems allow us to maintain the accuracy needed across the full workpiece, even when working with large and complex components.

And when cracking is present in cast iron, milling can be combined with metal stitching and crack repair to stabilise the structure before final machining.

It's rare that we get to snap pictures on site, as our engineers are usually pretty busy getting on with the job.

Onsite machining often means working around large machinery, in confined spaces and sometimes in some pretty unusual positions.

It's safe to say, judging by the smile, this project is going pretty well. ๐Ÿ‘

When is crankshaft annealing actually needed? ๐Ÿ‘€

Itโ€™s not something you do to every crankshaft. Annealing becomes necessary when inspection identifies issues such as excessive crankpin hardness, runout outside OEM tolerances, or thermal stress following a failure.

Put simply, if a crankpin is too hard to machine accurately, reducing the hardness can be an important step before final machining.

Our crankshaft annealing process can reduce crankpin hardness by up to 300 HB, helping prepare the surface for accurate machining and supporting restoration back to OEM standards.

Last month, we were onsite with Kongsberg Marine and Shipping carrying out a line boring repair on a marine engine component.

The existing bores were damaged and affecting alignment, so the aim was to restore them to OEM specification while keeping downtime to a minimum.

Our engineers machined the damaged bores onsite, installed precision-engineered replacement sleeves and completed the final line boring to bring everything back within the required OEM limits.

The repair was completed within 3 days, with alignment and final sizing verified before the component was returned to operation. ๐Ÿ™Œ

A great bit of feedback following an emergency line boring job.

Our team was called in at short notice, and we're pleased we could respond quickly and deliver the work needed. ๐Ÿ™Œ

When a critical piece of equipment goes down, the question isn't just what's wrong?

It's also how quickly can someone get there?

We provide a 24/7 emergency response service, mobilising engineers to sites across the UK and internationally.

How quickly we can respond depends on the location, the equipment involved and the work required. But being able to respond to urgent machining requirements is a ๐™›๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™™๐™–๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ก part of what we do. ๐Ÿค

The hardened layer was removed and the thrust face machined in-situ to OEM-specified tolerances, under OEM supervision.

The work was completed within hours, with dimensional checks and non-destructive testing carried out afterwards to verify the finished surface. โœ…

We often find ourselves working in some interesting positions... ๐Ÿ‘€

When you're carrying out onsite machining, getting access to the component is often half the challenge.

Whether it's inside a machine, beneath equipment or in a confined space, our engineers go where the repair is needed!
