Dales Marine Services

Dales Marine Services Specialists in dry dock and steelwork, fabrication, maintenance and ship repair.

Dales Marine Services started in 1991 in Aberdeen as an offshoot from Dales Engineering and as part of the Dales Group. In 1991, the company started with eight employees and now employs around 100 staff with an additional 20-50 subcontractors. Dales Marine Services operated from various harbour locations until taking over the only dry dock in Aberdeen from its previous owner in 2004. The previous

owners had docked an average of 14 vessels per annum and in the first year of operation Dales docked 48 vessels. In 2014, Dales Marine bought over the Forth Group, so the company now has six dry docks, and six repair and conversion yards. These are located in Aberdeen, Leith, Grangemouth, Montrose, Greenock and Troon. Since inception it has been successful in securing ship repairing and marine engineering contracts along the East and West coasts of Scotland and England.

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming our local Fire Brigade from Port Glasgow, along with their Watch Commander of Blue Watch to our Greenock dry dock.

Represented by our Health and Safety Advisor, Charlie Connaghan, the visit gave them a chance to see the layout of our vessels, our working environment, and some of the projects we’re involved in including working in confined spaces.

Thank you for coming it was great to have you, and we look forward to welcoming you back again.

We were pleased to welcome the 47th & 97th Greenock & District Scouts to our Greenock dry dock.

Charlie Connaghan, our Health & Safety Advisor, guided the Scouts through the dry dock, where seeing a vessel out of the water sparked curiosity and questions about how Dales Marine works.

The tour continued with a look around the historic Waverley and our workshops, giving the Scouts a sense of the hands-on work involved in ship maintenance.

Before heading home, each Scout received a goodie bag with Dales pens, pencils, notebooks, and some treats as a small thank you for joining us.

It’s always rewarding to see young people curious and engaged, learning through direct experience and exploring the opportunities Scouting offers.

Thank you for coming!

About the 47th/97th Greenock Scouts:

We host the three younger sections of Scouting, from age 5½ up to 14. Once young people reach 14, they can move on to Explorer Scouts in either Greenock or Kilmacolm.

The 47th Greenock and District Scouts were founded in 1911, originally known as the 4th Port Glasgow. Over the years, the group moved around Port Glasgow. In July 2021, the 47th and 97th Greenock and District Scouts merged to become a single group, providing Scouting opportunities to the whole town of Port Glasgow.

Scouting provides fun, challenge, and adventure to over 500,000 members and their leaders across the UK.

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming pupils from St Columba’s High School, Gourock, along with their Design & Technology PT teacher, Ashley Quinn, to our Greenock dry dock.

The group were shown around by Charlie Connaghan, our Health & Safety Advisor, and given a tour of the dry dock and workshops. With permission from the captain, they also had the opportunity to step onboard the NLV Pharos from the Northern Lighthouse Board (the captain can be seen in the first photo).

The visit also concluded with a tour of the Waverley.

Before heading back to school, they were provided with small goodie bags containing pens, pencils, and notebooks to support their studies.

Thanks to everyone involved!

Recently, we welcomed students from Inverclyde high schools to Dales Marine Services to learn more about the roles and opportunities within our company.

The visit included students from Port Glasgow High School, St Stephen’s High School, Notre Dame High School and St Columba’s High School.

Our Health & Safety Advisor, Charlie Connaghan, represented the company and spoke to the students about working at Dales Marine and some of the opportunities available, including apprenticeships.

Before returning to school, the students were given a small Dales Marine pack with pens, notebooks and information about our apprenticeship opportunities.

Thank you to the schools and students for visiting we hope you enjoyed your time with us.

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Niall Jamieson from Port Glasgow High School St Stephen’s to the Greenock yard.

As part of the Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) “Apprentice for a Day” initiative across Inverclyde, we were delighted to get involved and give Niall a real insight into what an apprenticeship is all about.

Niall spent the day learning about what we do, touring the yard and vessels, and finding out how our apprenticeship scheme works in practice.

It’s been great to see his enthusiasm and even better to hear he applied for one of our apprenticeships!

A special thanks to Charlie Connaghan, our Health & Safety Advisor, who represented Dales and helped make the day a valuable and engaging experience.

Well done, Niall, and thank you to DYW for organising such a fantastic programme supporting the next generation of talent.

We recently had the opportunity to attend a careers fair at NESCol Skills Hub in Aberdeen.

It was great to speak with so many people interested in learning more about the opportunities we have available, and to have some really positive conversations throughout the day.

We also appreciated the chance to have a short tour of the Skills Hub and see the range of workshops and facilities supporting hands-on learning.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us, and to the team at NESCol for organising the event.
