Something BIG has been taking shape at our workshop!!

Last week was a busier week than usual, with plenty of hands on deck getting our new igloo up and standing!

What started out as a fresh concrete pad, containers being craned into position and finally putting the framework up overhead - it’s been a pretty big job!

A big effort from everyone involved, and it’s great to see it all finished and ready to go 💪🏻

Last week we asked: How often should you have your breathing air quality tested?

The answer 👉 It depends on what the breathing air is being used for, and which Australian Standard applies.

🤿 Diving AS2299
Breathing air used for diving requires air quality testing every 3 months.

👩‍🚒 Firefighting, confined space, rescue, welding, painting & other topside systems - AS1715 & 1716
These systems require air quality testing at least annually.

You can't tell whether breathing air is safe just by looking at it. Testing checks for things like moisture, oil, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and helps make sure the air you're breathing continues to meet the required standard.

Different application = different testing requirements. 👍

Breathing Air Breakdown #5 - Refrigerated dryer

Living in the tropics means one thing we know plenty about… Humidity! 😅🌞

That's where the refrigerated dryer comes in.

Sitting between the final stage of the compressor and the final separator, it cools the compressed air right down, forcing moisture and oil to condense so they can be removed from the air stream.

You won't typically see a refrigerated dryer on smaller or portable compressors, but up here in North Queensland, they're a must have for helping manage the extra moisture our hot and humid conditions bring.

Another important step in producing clean, quality breathing air. 👌

Breathing Air Breakdown - Episode 4: Separation 🌪️

Once the compressed air cools between stages, moisture and oil can condense into droplets. An intermediate separator removes these droplets before the air moves on to the next stage of compression.

Removing this contamination along the way helps protect the compressor and reduces the load on the purification system further down the line.

🚒💨 Places you didn't know high pressure air is used... 🛶

Here's one from the QBS Archives that's a bit different.

Queensland Breathing Systems was asked to update and repair the emergency inflation systems used on Queensland Fire Department rescue boats.

The boats carry a 5000PSI carbon fibre air cylinder connected to a regulator and valves running to different sections of the hull. If the hull is punctured during a rescue, air can be added to the section that needs it to help get the boat safely back to land.

QBS redesigned the original setup to make it lower profile and easier for crews to operate.

The system became known as the "Spider" 🕷️🕸️ and there are now around 40 of them in service across Queensland.

Not your everyday high pressure air application, but a pretty important one.
