Ask a supplier about ultra-low beds and you will usually be told they prevent falls. It is on most manufacturer websites, and it is not quite what the evidence says.

So this week we have written the more useful version: what a bed height, a profiling backrest and a pressure surface each actually do, and what they do not.

We've been supplying Australian healthcare since 1994, and it's still the same three conversations.

A clinician who wants something they used somewhere else. An ambulance service whose equipment hasn't caught up with how they now work. A fit-out where one item that can't be supplied holds up the handover.

Different problems, same question underneath: can you get exactly what's needed, and can you get it again next year.

Thank you to everyone who had us on the other end of the phone this week.

Sourcing a product that isn't in any catalogue comes down to five steps, and any one of them can stop it.

The one that surprises people is the regulatory check. A product cleared in the US or Europe can't be assumed available here.

It's always worth asking early.

Someone calls us looking for a product that isn't in anyone's catalogue. It happens more often than you might expect.

We'd rather help you find the right one than talk you into something close enough. Here's how sourcing works, and where these requests tend to stall.

One non-compliant fitting can undo the whole standard.

ENFit works because of the shape of the connector: it won't mate with a Luer fitting. That only protects the patient where every part of the pathway meets the same standard.

Our enteral range covers all three groups: syringes in six sizes, feeding tubes, and the adapters and connectors in between.

Moving a ward to ENFit is rarely the hard part. The awkward bit is the middle, when both connector standards are on the ward at once and "will this fit?" depends on which trolley someone opened.

We have put together a practical guide for nurse unit managers and procurement teams. It covers which end to convert first, what to do with legacy stock, and how to keep that overlap short.
