Oceania Power, Volvo Penta and shipbuilder Aus Ships Group are collaborating on Australia’s first electrically driven passenger ferry. The initiative is also supported by Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, highlighting the importance of real-world data to support the transition in marine transport.

Powered by a twin installation of the Volvo Penta IPS450E electric propulsion system, the vessel will deliver 250 kW per driveline, marking a first-of-its-kind configuration globally.

Currently under construction and scheduled for commissioning in Q4 2026, the project is designed as a demonstrator to advance real-world understanding of electric propulsion and support the adoption of sustainable marine transport.

Australia’s first electrically driven passenger ferry is starting to take shape.

Currently under construction by Aus Ships, the vessel will feature a twin installation of the Volvo Penta IPS450E electric propulsion system supplied by Oceania Power – with the hulls now prepared for the IPS units that will help power a new era of passenger transport.

Delivering 250 kW per driveline, this first-of-its-kind configuration is designed to demonstrate how integrated electric propulsion can support efficiency, reliability and confidence in real-world commercial operations.

Commissioning is planned for Q4 2026, after which the vessel will be used as a demonstrator to generate valuable operational insights for the future of electric marine transport.
