Had a ripper day out at one of our customers' yards in Melbourne last week, watching their Kobelco fleet in action on the car dismantling game.
They've got a good spread running, from an old faithful SK135D right through to their newest addition, the SK140SRD-7. Watching these machines work is something else. They're absolutely flat out all day, tearing panels off, crushing shells and shifting scrap, and you can see it in their battle scars. Paint's worn back to bare steel in spots, guarding's dented to buggery, but they just keep grinding away.
These would have to be some of the hardest working machines in the whole Kobelco range. No easy days on a dismantling site, and this customer's gear proves it can cop a hiding and still turn up for work.
The latest SK140SRD-7 is purpose built for the job, not just a standard excavator with a grab bolted on. Operating weight sits around 20.5 tonnes, it's running the Isuzu engine putting out 78.5kW, and it's got a beefed up boom and arm with reinforced plating specifically for demolition work. Reach is just under 10 metres so it can work a decent sized yard without having to reposition every five minutes.
Big thanks to the crew for having us out and letting us get amongst it. Always good to see the gear earning its keep in the real world, not just on a spec sheet.
