Pregnancy discrimination is unlawful. So why are Australian women still losing their jobs after becoming pregnant or having children?

A new ABC Four Corners investigation has exposed accounts of women being dismissed, sidelined or pushed into redundancy after pregnancy or childbirth.

Being treated unfairly because of pregnancy or caring responsibilities can have serious consequences — not just for financial security and career progression, but for mental health and wellbeing.

All workers deserve to be treated fairly, and employers have a responsibility to prevent unlawful discrimination.

More than 1 in 5 Australian workers surveyed reported experiencing a work-related mental health issue in the past year, according to the latest Work Shouldn't Hurt survey by the ACTU.

In this article, we break down what the survey tells us:

👉mental health injuries are being reported at almost twice the rate of physical ones,
👉workers with a mental health injury are less likely to seek treatment or make a compensation claim than those with a physical injury,
👉 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers continue to face significantly higher rates of injury and risk across almost every measure.

There are also some encouraging signs, including more workers taking time off when they need it and employers placing greater weight on mental health hazards.

⚡October is National !

This year's theme is "Safe work is for life". It's an important acknowledgment that work health and safety is about more than preventing harm in the moment. It's about protecting workers' lives and their future, and that includes their mental health.

Over the next four weeks, workplaces across Australia are being encouraged to reflect on why WHS matters, identify hidden hazards, think about the long-term impact of harm, and turn those conversations into lasting action.

⚡WorkSafe Victoria is putting $6.9 million behind three-year industry trials across healthcare and social assistance, early childhood education, and public administration, the sectors with some of the highest rates of mental injury claims.

Workers, employers, unions and psychological health experts will co-design the solutions, rather than have them handed down.

💡Gig work is changing — and the conversation is about more than pay.

This month on the Mind Your Head blog, we unpack new standards for gig delivery workers and look at an emerging workplace mental health issue: algorithmic management.

When an algorithm determines workloads, performance expectations and access to work, it can affect job control, predictability and pressure — all factors that can shape workers’ mental health.

So what do the new protections change, and where do gaps remain?

💡More than 1 in 5 workers reported experiencing a work-related mental health issue in the past year.

The latest Work Shouldn’t Hurt survey by the ACTU provides an important snapshot of health and safety across Australian workplaces — and shows psychological harm remains a significant concern across industries.

There are some encouraging signs: workers experiencing mental health injuries are increasingly taking time off when they need it, and more workers report that employers are giving mental hazards the same importance as physical hazards.

But there is still significant work to do to ensure every worker is protected from psychological harm.

With AI being increasingly used at Australian workplaces, new national guidance has been released, detailing controls that employers must put in place to mitigate OHS risks associated with it's introduction.

The message is simple: these hazards must be addressed just like any other OHS risk. This includes consulting with workers, using safety-first tools, and keeping humans in the loop.

💡One in three Australian workers expects technology to significantly change their job within three years. For many, that uncertainty is already affecting their mental health at work.

Our latest blog post breaks down what "technostress" looks like in Australian workplaces, what workers can do if they feel over-monitored, and what good practice looks like for employers introducing new technology.

Introducing Behind the Buzzword — where we cut through the jargon and explain what workplace mental health language actually means in practice.

👉First up: techno-stress.

You've probably felt it without knowing there was a name for it. The mental load of juggling too many platforms, the anxiety of a never-ending inbox, and the pressure to be reachable even after you've logged off. This is particularly prevalent as we adapt to evolving AI implementation in Australian workplaces.

Techno-stress is real, it's recognised, and in 2026, it's finally being treated as a workplace health and safety issue.
