🥶 A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 8

There are two types of people who get into a swimming pool in the middle of winter.

Very brave people… and pool technicians who have made a terrible mistake.

It was a freezing winter’s day and I was servicing a customer’s pool.
I bent down beside the pool to do something, completely forgetting there was a big landscaping boulder directly behind me.
As I bent down, I backed straight into it.

There was nowhere to go.
No graceful recovery.
No miraculous display of balance.

Just me, the boulder… and the pool.

SPLASH.
Straight in. Fully clothed. 😂

And because apparently falling into a freezing pool wasn’t enough, I still had to climb back out soaking wet and finish the job.

The pool was clean.
My dignity was not.

Just another day in the life of a poolie. 🏊‍♂️😂

🐍 A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 7

You never quite know what you’re going to find when you lift the lid of a skimmer box.
Leaves? Obviously.
Toads? Fairly regularly.
The occasional pool toy? Sure.
A huge snake? Not ideal.

I lifted the skimmer lid at a customer’s pool one day and discovered a very large, very much alive snake curled up inside.

There was really only one thing to do.
I grabbed the pool broom, carefully fished the snake out of the skimmer and lifted it over the pool fence into the garden.

Problem solved.

Meanwhile, our new employee had taken a slightly different approach to the situation.
He ran for the hills.
Screaming. 😂
Apparently, “dealing with wildlife” hadn't featured prominently enough in the job description.

A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 6 🚙

There are a few things you expect to deal with during a normal day servicing pools.

Leaves.
Green pools.
Broken equipment.
The occasional toad.

Your work ute driving itself into a ditch is generally not one of them.

One of our team had parked the ute on the street while servicing a customer’s pool and headed inside to get to work.

Unfortunately, the handbrake had other ideas.

At some point, the ute began very slowly rolling away on its own.
No driver.
No passengers.
Just the Affordable Pool Service ute casually heading off on an adventure.

Its solo journey didn’t last particularly long.
It ended in a ditch. 😂

Thankfully, nobody was hurt and there was no major damage — although we did learn a valuable lesson:
When parking the work ute, applying the handbrake is important.
Making sure it’s actually engaged is even better.

🎄 A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 5 💵

You never quite know what you’re going to find in a skimmer basket.

Leaves? Absolutely.
Frogs? Occasionally.
Pool toys? All the time.

$500 in cash? That was a new one.

It was just before Christmas when I opened a customer’s skimmer basket and found ten very wet $50 notes sitting amongst the leaves.

For a brief moment, I did wonder if this was some kind of unusually generous Christmas tipping system. 😂

Deciding that was probably unlikely, I carefully pulled the notes out and laid them around the edge of the skimmer on the pavers to dry while I serviced the pool.

When I finished, I gathered up the now considerably less soggy $500 and returned it to the owner.

Mystery solved.

He’d had a Christmas party, jumped into the pool fully clothed in his suit, and apparently forgotten there was $500 cash in his pocket.

The money had escaped, made its way through the pool and eventually been collected by the skimmer.

He was VERY happy to see it again.

Just another day in the life of a poolie.

And no… sadly, it wasn’t my Christmas tip. 😂

A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 4 🏊‍♂️🤦‍♂️

You know that feeling when you confidently walk into a room... and immediately realise you're in the wrong place?

Well... imagine that, except it takes you 45 minutes to realise.

I turned up to what I thought was my next service, unlocked the gate, vacuumed the pool, brushed the walls, balanced the water, emptied the baskets, packed everything up and admired another job well done.

Just as I was about to leave, the homeowner came outside.

He smiled and said,

"Thanks... but I think you might be at the wrong house."

I laughed.

Then I checked my phone.

Then I stopped laughing.

Sure enough... I'd just serviced the pool next door.

The good news?

One very lucky neighbour got a complimentary pool service that day. 😂

After more than a decade in the industry, we've learnt that no matter how carefully you plan your day, every now and then life likes to keep you humble.

Luckily, this one made for a pretty good story.

A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 3 🩲🤦‍♂️

People often ask us what sort of things stop robot pool cleaners from working.

Usually it's sticks, palm seeds, gum nuts... the occasional toy.

But this one was a first.

A regular customer called because his robot cleaner had stopped working. I pulled it apart, expecting to find the usual culprit.

Instead, bound up in the mechanical roller.....was a pair of women's swimsuit bottoms. 😳

I looked over at him, held them up with my best poker face and said, "I think I've found the problem."

The look on his face was priceless, and after a second we both burst out laughing.

To this day I still have absolutely no idea how they ended up in there... and I never asked. 😂

After more than a decade cleaning pools around Brisbane, we've learnt one thing...

You never know what you're going to find next.

People think pool servicing is all about testing water and cleaning baskets...

If only they knew. 😂

Today's adventure started like any other service... until I accidentally let THREE dogs into the fenced pool area.

Within seconds they were tearing around the pool at full speed, chasing each other, crashing into one another, and taking turns knocking each other into the pool! 🐶💦

Naturally, I had to chase them all down to get them back out.
Picture three soaking wet dogs running laps around a pool... with me desperately trying to herd them.

It was like watching (and starring in!) a Benny Hill chase scene. All it needed was the music! 🤣

Eventually I rounded them all up, but I reckon I got more exercise than the dogs did.

Just another completely normal day in the life of a pool technician... 😅

A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 2 🤣

I was giving a new homeowner a full crash course on pool chemistry and how all the equipment worked.
Everything was going perfectly...

Until I opened the skimmer box.

Inside were a couple of dead little birds.

The homeowner took one look.....and fainted! 😳

Needless to say, the pool lesson was temporarily postponed.

No one tells you these are the sorts of situations you can find yourself in as a pool technician. Every day is different, and after more than a decade on the job, we've collected some unique stories!
