We’ve all watched a horror movie and yelled at the screen:

“Don’t go into the basement!”

“Don’t open that door!”

“And whatever you do…don’t click the suspicious link!”

Unfortunately, Karen clicked it. Then she reused Password123, postponed her security update until the end of civilisation and nearly handed her MFA code to a stranger dressed like a low-budget vampire. 🧛‍♂️

The good news is that most cyber horror stories can be avoided with a few simple decisions: slow down, check the message, use unique passwords, install your updates and protect your accounts with MFA.

Cyber Security Action Month might be nearly over, but the criminals don’t pack up their laptops on 1 November.

Apparently, knowing the password doesn’t automatically get you into the club. Who knew? 😏

Passwords can be guessed, stolen or leaked. MFA is the slightly grumpy bouncer standing between a criminal and everything inside your account.

Yes, it might cost you an extra ten seconds when you sign in, but it could save you a much longer and significantly less enjoyable conversation with your bank, workplace or family.

If you haven’t switched MFA on yet, Cyber Security Action Month is a pretty good time to finally do it.

Give your accounts a better bouncer. 🔐🦄

What a massive four days from Brisbane to Kuala Lumpur for the LAWYERS ASSOCIATED WORLDWIDE AGM at the Four Seasons KL.

I was honoured to be able to talk to a packed room of amazing LAW members from law firms around the world (the image with me on the screen was empty room though during mic 🎙️ up while everyone was on break - very happy it wasn’t that empty while I was talking 😎). I also had the privilege to spend more time with them throughout the couple of days I was at the event with. Such an incredible group of people.

I always talk about how we need to break outside the cyber security space and talk to people where they are. This was one of those times. Ecstatic that I was able to share my experience with them and hopefully send them all back to their firms asking the right kinds of questions to help make them all more secure for it.

Back in Australian soil now slowly making my way home. One more flight ✈️ to go.

Your password called.

It wants annual leave.

Apparently it’s been running your email, Facebook, shopping and half the business since 2014.

You added an exclamation mark and called it a promotion.

It’s considering its options.

Jokes aside, using the same password everywhere means if someone steals it from one account, they can try it on the others.

Give each account a strong, unique password.

Let a password manager do the remembering, and switch on multi-factor authentication too.

One practical change for Cyber Security Action Month that’s worth keeping all year.

How many jobs has your password got?

Don’t tell me the password… this isn’t that kind of survey.

Send this to someone whose password deserves a long-service award.

I’ve received some lovely reviews for my books, but a one-star review from a cybercriminal?

I’d happily take that.

“Checked the invoice. Had MFA switched on. Didn’t fall for my nonsense. Very disappointing.”

That’s the goal.

October is Cyber Security Action Month, so pick one thing you’ve been meaning to sort out and get it done. Please update that device, stop reusing that password, or check that your backups actually work.

Then keep going after October. The scammers won’t be taking November off.

You wouldn’t brush your teeth once in October and call it sorted for the year.

Your dentist would have questions.

Cyber security deserves the same regular attention. October is Cyber Security Action Month, and it’s a great excuse to tackle that update you’ve postponed approximately 847 times.

But protecting yourself, your family or your business takes more than a calendar reminder.

Strong, unique passwords. MFA switched on. Backups that actually work. A pause before clicking. And keeping ourselves and our teams learning.

Pick one thing to improve today.

Then keep going in November.

What’s the cyber task you’ve been putting off?
