The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that U.S. apparent consumption of iron and steel scrap reached 57 million metric tons in 2025, up from 55 million in 2024.

Last mow of the season. For some mowers, the last mow, period.

A dead push mower or riding mower is steel and aluminum, and it's scrap. Before it goes in the truck: run the gas tank dry or drain it, and drain the oil. An undrained fuel tank keeps a mower off the scale. A drained one goes across like any other load.

The Aluminum Association and the Can Manufacturers Institute report that more than 61 billion aluminum cans, worth about $1.18 billion, fell outside the U.S. recycling stream in 2023. The consumer can recycling rate that year was 43.0 percent.

Cut it down or bring it as is. Both work.

Albert Bros. accepts #1 and #2 steel and plate prepared, meaning cut to 3 ft x 5 ft and down, and unprepared. They're two different grades, not a rule you have to meet before you drive in.

The cushions are shot. The webbing tore in August. The frame is still aluminum.

Before the old patio set goes on the truck, strip it: cut off the webbing and straps, pull the cushions, pop off the plastic feet and caps. Metal with loose non-metal attached can't go across the scale. A bare frame can.

Recycled aluminum has a chemistry problem. Old metal carries trace elements that new alloys don't want.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy lab, demonstrated a way around it: an alloy designed to tolerate those impurities, cast into structural automotive parts made from post-consumer aluminum auto-body sheet scrap. It was a demonstration, with ingots supplied in Chicago and casting done in Michigan.

The takeaway for manufacturers: clean, well-sorted aluminum scrap is worth more the further it travels back up the supply chain. That sorting starts at your dock.
