🐦 Exciting news from Wisconsin Point!

Last week, a pair of piping plovers were observed nesting on Wisconsin Point for the first time since 1977, nearly 50 years ago!

This exciting milestone highlights the impact of ongoing restoration efforts in the St. Louis River Estuary and the value of investing in habitat restoration.

AMI had the opportunity to help advance the Wisconsin Point Coastal Habitat Restoration & Resiliency Project through engineering, coastal modeling, habitat evaluation, field investigations, and restoration planning. Our team worked closely with project partners to better understand shoreline conditions and develop solutions that help protect both coastal resilience and ecological health.

The return of piping plovers is encouraging news for this endangered species and a testament to the many organizations that have worked together to improve habitat conditions at Wisconsin Point. We're proud to have played a role alongside the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and other project partners in helping support the future of Wisconsin Point and the wildlife that call it home!

⛳ We had a great time yesterday at Better In Our Back Yard's 5th Annual Golf Scramble at the Cloquet Country Club!

AMI sponsored a hole at this year's event and enjoyed connecting with fellow Better In Our Backyard members throughout the day. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth and played our game! 🏌️

AMI also hit the course alongside our team partners from for a fun day of golf and good company.

🛠️ Toolbox Thursday: What Is LiDAR?

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) uses laser pulses to create highly detailed 3D maps of terrain and structures.

Engineers use LiDAR to quickly collect accurate elevation data for:

✅ Shorelines and beaches
✅ Transportation systems
✅ Construction sites
✅ Flood studies
✅ And more!

Millions of measurements can be collected in a fraction of the time required by traditional methods, improving both efficiency and accuracy. Pretty cool, right?

At AMI, good engineering starts with good data. LiDAR is just one of the many tools we use to support successful project outcomes.

🌴 From the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast.

Our team recently spent time in Panama City, Florida, conducting an above-water baseline inspection of the Russell-Fields Pier, a 1,500-foot-long fixed pier structure. The work included documenting the condition of the pier's structural components and preparing a report to help guide future maintenance and management efforts.

Not a bad office for a couple of days.

| Saint Paul Port Authority Cemstone Dock Expansion - Saint Paul, MN

Today we're taking a look back at the SPPA Cemstone Dock Expansion at Barge Terminal #1, a project that increased the facility's ability to receive, store, and transfer cementitious materials while improving an important piece of waterfront infrastructure along the Mississippi River.

AMI provided project management, permitting, bidding assistance, and construction administration services throughout the project.

Some of the key project improvements included:
• New pile-supported concrete dock platform
• Breasting dolphins and fender systems
• Barge pulling equipment and dock crane
• Bulk material unloading equipment
• Three new material storage silos
• Material transfer equipment and facility upgrades

Beyond the physical improvements, our team coordinated permitting and regulatory approvals, developed bid documents to meet PDAP funding requirements, managed the public bidding process, and provided construction oversight through daily inspections, contractor coordination, progress reporting, and project closeout.

🐉As Barker's Island Marina comes alive for the 2026 Lake Superior Dragon Boats Festival, it's exciting to see so many people gathering along a waterfront that AMI has helped shape and improve for more than a decade.

Since 2010, AMI has partnered with the City of Superior on projects throughout the Barker’s Island Complex, including the marina, beach, trails, public facilities, and the historic ship museum.

Our 6.74-acre Beach Restoration Project improved water quality through enhanced stormwater management, native vegetation plantings, wetland restoration, pervious pavement, and other sustainable design features. We also designed new restroom facilities, pet waste stations, and additional garbage receptacles to support a cleaner, healthier shoreline experience.

At Barker’s Island Marina, AMI has provided planning, engineering, and construction management services for major facility upgrades, including dock improvements, utility upgrades, and slip reconfigurations. We also designed a travel lift containment system that helps prevent pollutants and invasive species from entering the harbor, supporting the marina’s participation in the Wisconsin Clean Marina Program.

Whether you're racing, cheering from the shoreline, or simply enjoying the day on the waterfront, the Dragon Boat Festival is a great reminder of everything Barker’s Island has to offer.

Good luck to all the teams competing this weekend!

What does engineering look like underwater? 🤿

This ROV inspection at Bde Maka Ska took us below the surface to inspect an equalization pipe and look for invasive zebra mussels. The fish seemed impressed with our ROV's maneuvering skills.🐟👀

Whether it's a diver behind the camera or a robotic ROV exploring hard-to-reach areas, our team uses a variety of tools to capture the information our clients need:

✨ Underwater cameras
✨ Sonar and 3D mapping technology
✨ Robotic ROVs
✨ Diver-mounted cameras

Sometimes the most important engineering work happens where no one can see it.
