Did you know that pearls, one of June's birthstones, are created by mollusks like oysters as a defense against irritants? When sand gets trapped, the mollusk produces nacre, or mother-of-pearl, to encase it. This nacre, composed of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, forms layers that give pearls their distinct shine. Pearls can be white, pink, black, or even blue, depending on their host's shell color. But here's the catch: they’re super rare! If you opened 10,000 wild oysters, you might find just one dazzling pearl hiding inside! How's that for a treasure hunt?
