Relational architecture means we don’t just design buildings—we build relationships. It’s only fundamental.

At Abacus Architects, we believe in architecture for all—building together toward a shared vision. RELATIONAL ARCHITECTURE

Designing buildings that connect with their communities. Creating places that inspire, enrich, or simply work well is vitally important to us. In fact, every project we pursue is based on our ability to enhance community life. At Abacus Architects, we design to build relationships between people and their environments. Architecture should serve the people who inhabit the places we create, not the other way around. It’s architecture for all of us, building together to reach a common goal.

We were excited to join the Yerkes Observatory community in celebrating the groundbreaking of the new Yerkes Family Pavilion in Williams Bay, Wisconsin!

Designed to enhance the visitor experience, the new pavilion will feature accessible family restrooms, a dedicated nursing and sensory space, and covered outdoor areas for visitors to gather and enjoy the grounds.

We're grateful to be part of a project that supports the continued growth of this historic destination while creating a more welcoming and accessible experience for visitors of all ages.

Meet Anne!

As an Interior Designer at Abacus, Anne Blanke works closely with our architectural team to create thoughtful, functional spaces that bring our clients' visions to life.

From space planning and selecting materials to understanding each client's unique needs, Anne plays an important role in shaping how a space looks, feels, and functions.

For Anne, one of the most rewarding parts of her job is seeing a client's vision become reality and experiencing their reaction to the finished space.

In celebration of Architecture Month, we're taking you behind the scenes to meet the people who make it all happen.

Project Spotlight | Carriage House

A space designed around the way you live.

For this residential addition in Rockton, Illinois, the homeowners wanted to create a space that brought together several of their interests while still feeling connected to their existing home.

The addition includes a man cave and bar, show garage, golf simulator, and cigar room, along with a new en suite for the existing primary bedroom featuring two full-size walk-in closets.

One of the key design goals was creating a visual connection between the spaces, including the ability to see into the show garage directly from the bar. Throughout the interiors, existing décor was incorporated into the new design, with inspiration drawn from the homeowners' hobbies and travels.

Details like stained faux-wood beams and an African safari-inspired aesthetic help give the addition its own personality while making it distinctly theirs.

Building Our Future | A New Chapter in Sheboygan

Abacus has called Michigan Avenue home in one way or another since our founding in 2003.

Over the years, our address along Michigan Avenue may have changed, but Sheboygan has remained an important part of who we are. Now, we're getting ready for another move and another exciting chapter.

Our Sheboygan team will soon be relocating to a new space along the Sheboygan riverfront. The new office will bring our team together on one floor, give us room to continue growing, and create a space that better supports the way we work and collaborate.

We're grateful for the many years, projects, conversations, and relationships that have filled our current office, and we're excited for everything ahead in our new home.

More to come as we get closer to moving day!

A great day on the course for a great cause!

Our Abacus Architects team enjoyed participating in the Midwest Food Products Association's annual Sporting Clays Competition! We were proud to sponsor this year's event and spend the day connecting with fellow professionals in the food manufacturing industry.

Beyond the friendly competition, the event raised thousands of dollars in support of the MWFPA Scholarship Program, helping invest in the next generation of industry professionals.

Thank you to MWFPA for organizing another successful event. We're already looking forward to next year!

Looking Ahead, Together.

Once a year, our team takes time away from the day-to-day to focus on the bigger picture.

Last week, we gathered for our annual Strategic Planning Day, taking time to reflect on where we’ve been, talk about where we’re headed, and continue shaping the future of Abacus together.

Stepping outside the office gives us an opportunity to have meaningful conversations, share ideas, and make sure we’re continuing to grow with intention while staying grounded in the relationships and values that define who we are.

And a day by the lake isn’t a bad place to do it!

We’re grateful for the time together and excited about what’s ahead.

Today, we celebrate World Architecture Day and the impact the built environment has on the way we live, work, gather, and connect.

This year's theme, "Housing is a Human Right. Build It," reminds us that architecture is about more than buildings. At its core, it is about people and creating spaces that respond to real needs.

At Abacus, that belief is reflected in our approach to Relational Architecture. We begin by listening, understanding the people who will experience a space, and designing with their needs in mind.

Today, we're celebrating the architects, designers, engineers, clients, contractors, and partners who help turn ideas into places that serve people and strengthen communities.

Happy World Architecture Day!
