The Schaaf & Wheeler team has descended on Long Beach for FMA's 2026 Annual Conference. Congratulations to Lucy Maes, this year's recipient of the James R. Schaaf Civil Engineering Scholarship!

Lucy impressed us with her winning video entry about becoming interested in flood management engineering when her home in Guerneville was affected by the 2022/23 NYE storm.

Join Schaaf & Wheeler Vice President Caitlin Tharp at the Stormwater Speaker Series San Joaquin Valley presented by Oldcastle Infrastructure and Torrent Resources as she discusses “Citywide Trash Capture Design and Lessons Learned.” This practical overview of citywide full trash capture planning and design will include key decisions around:

• system selection
• siting
• and implementation strategies

Drawing on 15+ years of experience, Caitlin will share lessons learned from real projects; highlighting common challenges, tradeoffs, and approaches that lead to successful long term outcomes.

Schaaf & Wheeler President Chuck Anderson and Vice President Dan Schaaf were recently judges for the water treatment competition at the Mid-Pacific ASCE Student Symposium hosted by San José State University. They enjoyed seeing school spirit at the engineering level, and they witnessed many enthusiastic chants of FLOC-CU-LATION throughout the event. The future is bright!
