When scenic infrastructure demands both performance and precision.
Along the iconic Route 74 Ortega Highway in California, Boulderscape® delivered a solution where structural reliability, environmental integration, and visual authenticity were equally critical.
Caltrans required stabilization along a mountainous, highly visible corridor—while preserving the natural geological character of the surrounding landscape. Traditional finishes couldn’t meet both the aesthetic and cost constraints. The solution: high-performance structural shotcrete combined with a custom architectural finish designed to replicate native rock formations.
In just 8 days, our team installed:
8” thick structural shotcrete
1”–2” thick architectural shotcrete
18,488 square feet of reinforced wall surface
The result delivered 37% average savings over alternative wall finishes—while seamlessly blending into the natural terrain.
Project Highlights:
Boulderscape Finish: Corona Granite
Color Scheme: Earth Blend
Shoring System: Soil Nail Wall
Shotcrete Mix Design: 4,500 PSI
Average Relief: 3”
Cold Weather Engineering: 8–10% air entrainment with hydration stabilizers to reduce cracking risk and extend finishing time
Additional Scope: 91,493 square feet of stained concrete to match surrounding rock formations
This project demonstrates how engineered shotcrete solutions can meet strict environmental, structural, and aesthetic demands—without compromise.
At Boulderscape, shotcrete isn’t just a structural solution.
It’s a precision tool for shaping infrastructure that belongs in its environment.
