Winding Shop Wednesday

The electrical core is currently being wrapped snugly in place on this newly wound 5 legged core and coil for a three phase substation transformer. It has been carefully rewound one coil at a time to its original specs.

Once the core has been wrapped, it will then be hooked up and head back to the ALAMO dry out oven before being tanked and filled under a hot oil circulation process.

This Customer owned single-phase polemount is starting the process of reconditioning. Our ALAMO team is currently removing this core and coil from its tank which will then be inspected and then moved to the drying oven to eliminate any moisture the core and coil and insulation may have taken on over its years in service.

While the core and coil are in dryout oven, the tank will head another way to be cleaned, sanded and painted before the core and coil is retanked.

After retanking and the replacement of new gaskets, the polemount will be vacuum filled to customer's specification with insulating fluid of choice before sealing, undergoing a pressure test, final testing and final QC.

Pictured here is one, hot out of the bake out oven, newly wound, 4000 kva three phase copper coil. It was baked and pressed to thermally set the low and high voltage layers of insulation to the conductor and copper sheet.

This coil was reengineered and wound by the ALAMO team as originally designed… all the way down to the exact count of ducts and precise mils of insulating paper. The ducts help circulate the insulating fluid, leading to a cooler and more efficient transformer.

Currently on the winding spindle is coil #2 of a three phase set that is being rewound for a customer owned 3750 kVA Substation.

Once all three coils are finished being rewound, they will head to the bakeout oven, where the Kraft diamond back epoxy paper will heat cure. Once hardened, it will bond the coils, providing stronger mechanical strength which prevents displacement of coils during short circuit events, ensuring a more reliable transformer.

ALAMO uses diamond back epoxy insulation as layer to layer and turn insulation between coil conductor.
