Hector is checking the critical dimensions on these parts before we ship them out.

Our QC team works hard to ensure customers always receive parts that meet their specs.

Sometimes that’s very tedious– like when you need to check 100s of little pins to make sure they’re not 0.005” too big or too small.

Here’s a look at the process from start to finish for some of the parts we make.

1. We receive barstock from a supplier.
2. We cut the barstock Into smaller pieces to machine.
3. We machine the part features (drilling holes, cutting threads, chamfers, etc.)
4. We perform secondary operations, if applicable. Some parts are washed and engraved, others are anodized.
5. We inspect the parts to ensure all of the features and dimensions are correct.
6. We package the parts and ship them to the customer.

Depending on the parts, this entire process is done in a day or two. Other times it takes a week, or longer.

Dylan is getting these parts cleaned and ready to ship to the customer.

After machining these housings, any leftover metal chips and dust is blown off so they're ready for assembly when the customer receives them.

The next steps are:

This fresh bar stock is ready at the saw to be chopped into part blanks.

The process is important to our efficiency and costs per part. Precision matters even before the precision machining process.

Our goal is to cut as many parts as possible, with as little waste as possible.

Cutting an extra eighth inch off each bar is the difference between getting one more useable part out of each bar or not.

Making precise measurements and cuts at the saw means less metal goes into the scrap bin.

How do you ensure tight tolerances on complex parts?

For us, quality assurance starts on the shop floor. Here’s one of our machinists using an optical comparator for an in-process inspection.

The comparator magnifies a part's profile, and allows us to measure features with an accuracy of up to 0.0005 inches. This gives us a clear view of small parts and features, ensuring every part matches the print exactly.

Are you a skilled Davenport machinist who takes pride in your craft? Spex is a busy Rochester-based machine shop seeking an experienced operator to join our team.

Location: Rochester, NY Position Type: Full-Time

What You'll Be Doing Day-to-Day

As a Davenport Screw Machine Operator, you'll be responsible for the full process of creating high-quality, precision components. This is a hands-on role where you'll own the quality and efficiency of your work.

• Tooling and Adjustments: Sharpen and install tooling and make necessary adjustments to keep production running smoothly and efficiently.
• Problem-Solving: Monitor your machines, identify and diagnose issues, and apply your mechanical skills to troubleshoot and solve problems as they arise.

What We're Looking For
This role is for a skilled machinist who is reliable, detail-oriented, and ready to contribute from day one.

Experience: You should have at least 3-5 years of hands-on experience operating Davenport or other multi-spindle screw machines.

Technical Skills:
• You're proficient in reading and interpreting technical blueprints and understanding tolerances.
• You're skilled in using standard precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, etc.).
• You have a strong mechanical aptitude.

Work Style:
• You have a strong work ethic and eye for detail.
• You’re a problem-solver who can work both independently and as part of a team.
• You maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
