Paul is telling us about his newest experiment for his newest invention. The signal carried on the power line from the shop out to the road, to the highway and back again.

Why we invented HUG Hydronics

My house is older than my business. We built it before we designed a better in-floor heating system. It has many special features though, like foot thick insulated walls and double windows, it's almost like living in an insulated cooler with an air exchanger.

We use a ground water heat pump connected to a traditional in-floor heating system. All the parts are screwed to a wall behind a wall like door in the downstairs bathroom, which is great- most of the time.

Sunday, December 29th, we heard the train whistle blowing of a bad pump. We turned the thermostat down to turn off the in-floor heating system and texted my dad (the designer of HUG Hydronics and our older system) to help. But a few minutes later my teenage daughter totaled her boyfriend’s truck and the heating system was forgotten about (luckily, she was not hurt).

The temperatures dipped into the sub zeros at night and by Wednesday I noticed our floor was getting cold. So I restarted the system and we lived with the noise for a few days until its own failsafe turned it off again. On Saturday, my dad was able to come over and help us figure out what was going on.

The circulation pump to the floor was bad. It took him 5 hours to get that pump changed. With the HUG Hydronics system it would have taken 1 minute to change out a bad pump.

Someday (in the summer), we will replace our traditional style system with HUG Hydronics, so repairs are easy and I can understand how it all works, and even manage the repairs without my dad (we still love you and need you Daddy). But for now our toes are warm again.

Thanks Dad!
Thank you HUG Hydronics for showing us there is a better way.

Affordable living in an energy-efficient duplex like TWARC (Twin ARC) seamlessly merges sustainable design with cost-effective housing. TWARC features two interconnected units, each with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a greenhouse, and approximately 1,300 square feet. Its construction shares principles with the SPARC but in a duplex format, sitting on a floating concrete slab atop a heated sand bed powered by passive solar greenhouses. The building uses a unique “highly-insulated box,” with 10 inches of foam inside, serving as a temporary form that decomposes after backfilling. Unlike traditional SIP-based designs, TWARC employs double-wall and offset truss construction with dual frames—an exterior 2x6 and an interior 2x4—separated by 12 inches and filled with blown cellulose, effectively eliminating thermal bridges. Additionally, innovative “drop down” roof trusses allow for insulation overlap at the corners, preventing cold bridges and enhancing energy efficiency. This combination of advanced insulation, passive solar heating, and thoughtful structural design offers affordable, environmentally friendly living with reduced energy costs and increased comfort.

Blog Post: Using Heat-Sheet for Radon Mitigation

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, created by the natural decay of uranium, which is found in almost all soils. It enters your house through cracks and other holes in your foundation. Homes and buildings can trap radon inside, and the tighter a home is, the more radon can get trapped....
