Sue Powell, 89, passed away peacefully at Heritage Home in Pinedale, WY on November 20, 2025. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. Inurnment will be held in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery at a later date. She was born on June 21, 1936, to Lee & Edyth Hutsell, being named Margaret Sue Hutsell, and raised in Maryville, TN. She had 3 older brothers named Charles, Bill, and Jim; and 1 older sister named Aileen. After graduating high school, she moved to Olathe, KS to live with her sister Aileen and brother-in-law Shorty. There she met and married Shorty's navy friend Don Powell on August 19, 1955. She gave birth to a son Rick Powell. Then Don was diagnosed with Larynx Cancer. After 5 years of Don being cancer free, she gave birth to daughter, Teresa. After living in Parsons for approximately 60 years, she moved to Pinedale, WY in 2023 where her daughter lives. Sue was a wonderful and loving mother who faithfully supported her children by always being their biggest fan and being there in whatever way she could, or they needed, all their life.
Her jobs included being a wife and mother, a nurse aide at the Labette County Hospital, and a clerk at the Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons, Kansas. That company was bought by Day & Zimmerman where she worked until retiring. After retirement, her and Don were freer to camp and go on trips in their RV to see their daughter Teresa in Wyoming and son Rick in Washington state.
She had many interests and talents. She loved sports. In her younger adult years, she was on an adult softball team until she injured her knee and had to get surgery. She was on a bowling league for several years and did well enough to travel for competitions. Her daughter Teresa remembers being a bowling alley brat. She was even great at horseshoes. The rest of her sports loving life she was at every game her son Rick, then later, her grandson Tyler played. She loved to watch her Tennessee Volunteers. Football, baseball, and basketball. Also she was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. She even enjoyed Nascar. She was also very talented. She was very accomplished in crocheting, which turned into knitting which she loved. She could knit anything. It was amazing. Then she started quilting. The same skill and talent was there as well. She made beautiful quilts. The old way, stitching by hand.
Sue was preceded in death by her mother Edyth Hutsell, her 4 siblings, grandson Dylan Cackler, and her husband Don Powell. She is survived by her son Rick and wife Tina, along with grandchildren Jeriah, Tyler, Angie, and Travis; her daughter Teresa and husband Mike and their children Dallas and Hannah.
