The type and area of a the weld matters. The Badger exclusive friction stir welded bracing has approximately 3/4 of a square inch of 6061 T6 bracing fused to the 6061 T6 face by stirring the two pieces of metal together with pressure and friction. Over that welded area the two pieces become one.

The MIG weld along the edge of the brace on the other form is 6061 T6 bracing material welded to a softer face material. The welded area is about 0.1875 square inches. MIG welds vary so some will have a little more welded area and some a little less.

The second installment in a series about friction stir welded aluminum concrete form panels. It pretty amazing technology that allows 6061 T6 aluminum extrusions can be fused into one piece such that you can't feel the seam. They do it on space craft, why not on concrete form panels.

We've done it; our 36" wide panels are now friction stir welded into one piece. It is leap forward for quality and durability. It's likely the biggest innovation in aluminum formwork since Western Forms introduced their gasketed side rails decades ago. Come see one at our World of Concrete booth N2513. It is just inside the North Hall.
