Employee Spotlight: Jesse Leger | Full-Time Travelift Mechanic

Jesse Leger joined Colonna’s Shipyard in March 2024 as a temporary Maintenance Mechanic and has since transitioned into a full-time Travelift Mechanic, supporting all lifts and launches in and out of the water.

What keeps Jesse motivated? The challenge.

He shared that no two days are the same and every task is an opportunity to do things the right way and create lasting impact rather than just getting by.

One of Jesse’s favorite parts of working at Colonna’s is the people and culture. His advice: stay true to our pillars and values and live them every day.

Recently, Jesse supported the annual inspection of our Marine Travelift alongside engineers from the original builder. We’re proud to share the Travelift passed successfully.

Looking ahead, Jesse is excited about Colonna’s continued growth and the addition of the new dry dock.

And one bonus perk?

“The free coffee doesn’t hurt either.”

At Colonna’s Shipyard, safety has never been limited to PPE, procedures, or the job in front of us. Real safety means taking care of the whole person because the condition you show up in matters just as much as the work you perform.

This week’s National Safety Month focus is holistic health and total worker well-being. That means recognizing that mental focus, physical readiness, stress levels, fatigue, and supporting one another all play a role in creating a safer workplace.

Whether you’re in the yard, in fabrication, on the waterfront, in the office, or supporting operations behind the scenes, small habits make a difference:

• Get enough rest so you can stay alert and make safe decisions
• Stretch and prepare your body before starting physically demanding work
• Pay attention to signs of stress, fatigue, or burnout
• Take breaks when needed to reset and refocus
• Look out for your teammates and speak up if something doesn’t seem right

At Colonna’s, safety is not just about preventing incidents. It’s about making sure every employee goes home healthy and ready to come back tomorrow.

For more than 150 years, Colonna’s Shipyard has been part of the maritime story of Hampton Roads and it’s an honor to support one of its most historic moments yet.

We’re proud to sponsor Sail250 Virginia’s Parade of Sail, a once-in-a-generation celebration that will bring tall ships, naval vessels, and visitors from around the world to our waterfront as America commemorates 250 years.

We had a great time supporting and sponsoring VSRA’s Race Night at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway this past weekend!

Events like this are a great reminder that our industry is powered by people. From the shipyard to the speedway, it was an opportunity to celebrate the hardworking men and women who keep maritime moving .

One of the highlights of the evening was seeing Colonna’s teammates Meaghan Parish and Gisaun Brothers recognized as VSRA’s 2025 Tradesperson of the Year recipients and invited to present the Pepsi Grand Stocks Race trophy in Victory Lane.

Colonna's Shipyard recently had the pleasure of hosting members of the Virginia Maritime Association's Young Maritime Professionals program for a tour of our facilities and an opportunity to learn more about ship repair operations in Hampton Roads.

During the visit, participants were able to see firsthand the people, equipment, and infrastructure that support our customers across the commercial, government, and defense sectors. As one of America's oldest private shipyards, Colonna's was proud to share both our history and our continued investment in the future of maritime repair and modernization, including our 1,000-ton mobile boat hoist.

Thank you to the YMP group for visiting and for their commitment to strengthening the future of Virginia's maritime industry.

At Colonna’s Shipyard, taking pride in our workplace has always been part of who we are. Years ago, our Wednesday trash walks were started by retired Vice President of Shipyard Operations and current Board Member, Steve Walker, with a simple idea: leave the yard better than you found it.

Today, all hands are invited (schedule permitting) each Wednesday to spend time walking the yard and cleaning up together. It’s a small tradition that makes a big difference and reflects the pride we take in where we work.

In honor of the man who started it all, the team affectionately named it Mr. Steve.

Some traditions are worth keeping.
