Last Friday, Colonna’s Shipyard had the pleasure of welcoming the Society for Industrial Archeology for a visit and behind-the-scenes tour of our facilities.

SIA’s mission is to encourage the study, interpretation, and preservation of historically significant industrial sites, structures, artifacts, and technology, making their visit to Colonna’s an exciting opportunity to connect maritime history with industrial work still happening today.

Guests toured our marine railway, Dry Docks 1 and 2, and 1,000 MT Marine Travelift, while getting a behind-the-scenes look at ship repair operations in action. They especially enjoyed visiting the Colonna’s museum to learn more about our 150+ year history and legacy.

Thank you to SIA for spending time with us and for the work you do to preserve and share America’s industrial heritage.

May is Military Appreciation Month, and at Colonna’s Shipyard, we’re proud to support the vessels, programs, and crews that help protect, serve, and strengthen our nation every day.

From critical CVN and SUBSEA programs to U.S. Navy ships, Military Sealift Command vessels, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assets, Coast Guard cutters, military training ships, and NOAA vessels supporting important missions, our workforce is proud to help keep these fleets mission ready and operating around the world.

Behind every repair, inspection, and availability is a team of skilled tradespeople committed to supporting the mission.

As we look ahead to the arrival of our new drydock in 2028, we see tremendous opportunity to expand our support of the fleet and take on larger, more complex projects that strengthen national defense. Continued investment and a steady stream of Navy work are essential to growing the next generation of skilled tradespeople and sustaining a strong, confident workforce for the future.

Thank you to all who serve, both on the water and behind the scenes.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

At Colonna's Shipyard, we are reminded every day that the work done along the waterfront supports something bigger than ourselves. Behind every vessel is a mission. Behind every mission are the people who served and sacrificed for our nation.

Today, we honor those who never made it home. Their legacy continues through the strength, dedication, and freedom they helped protect.

In Hampton Roads, maritime isn’t just an industry - it’s part of our way of life. ⚓

From early mornings on the waterfront to the final lift of the day, this is what keeping maritime moving looks like.

It’s welders, riggers, crane operators, and tradespeople getting the job done safely and with pride. It’s generations of hardworking families building careers along these waterfronts and supporting one of the most important maritime regions in the world.

At Colonna’s Shipyard, we’re proud to be part of an industry that keeps the fleet ready, commerce moving, and our community strong.

Happy National Maritime Day.

As we continue through National Maritime Week, Colonna’s Shipyard was proud to serve as a Title Sponsor for the The Propeller Club, Port of Norfolk National Maritime Day Golf Classic yesterday. ⚓

The event brought together maritime industry professionals, partners, and supporters from across Hampton Roads to celebrate the people and organizations that help keep our maritime community strong.

Maritime is more than an industry in this region — it’s a shared mission, a workforce, and a way of life. We’re grateful to support events like this that bring the maritime community together both on and off the waterfront.

Thank you to the Norfolk Propeller Club for hosting another great event.

We’re proud to share that Colonna’s Shipyard has been recognized by the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) with both the 2025 Excellence in Safety Award and Improvement in Safety Award. ⚓

These awards recognize shipyards across the country for strong safety performance and continued improvement in workplace safety.

At Colonna’s, safety is everyone’s job - all the time. This recognition reflects the hard work, accountability, and commitment our workforce brings to the waterfront every single day. From the shops to the drydocks, our team continues to look out for one another and work together to make sure everyone goes home safe and healthy.

Thank you to every employee who helps build and strengthen our culture of safety across the yard.

Rain or shine, the Mud Bug carries on. 🦞

This year marked Colonna’s Shipyard’s 33rd Annual Crawfish Jamboree, affectionately known as the “Mud Bug.” Held at the historic Houseboat built by Captain Will Colonna Sr. in 1927, the event continues to bring together customers, industry partners, employees, friends, and family for one of our favorite traditions of the year.

Despite the weather, the food was hot, the conversations were flowing, and the memories were made. A big thank you to Wickers Crab Pot for doing a great job with the food and helping make the day a success.

Year after year, the Mud Bug reminds us that the relationships built across this industry matter just as much as the work itself.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped keep the tradition alive. Until next year.

This weekend, Colonna’s Shipyard was proud to participate in Nauticus’ Weld It, Build It, Sail It Maritime Careers Festival. ⚓

Meaghan Parish leaned in to help demonstrate the importance of corrosion control and gave kids a hands-on look at the work that helps protect and preserve vessels across the maritime industry.

Thank you to Nauticus and the Hampton Roads Maritime Training System for hosting a great event focused on introducing the next generation to careers in maritime and the skilled trades.
