Throwback: The Legendary Mugen RR Advanced Concept at King Motorsports Dyno Day!

Few moments in our shop’s history were quite as electric as the day we hosted the iconic MUGEN RR ADVANCED CONCEPT right here at King Motorsports during one of our annual Dyno Days!

Originally unveiled as a reference model at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS), this incredible machine took the already legendary foundation of the FD2 MUGEN RR and pushed it straight into uncharted territory. Developed around the aggressive theme of “Incredible Super Sports,” the Advanced Concept represented Mugen’s absolute boldest vision for the ultimate front-wheel-drive street car.

Engineering Without Compromise
Mugen’s engineers spared no expense in turning this concept into a lightweight, high-output weapon:

Extreme Weight Reduction: Built using cutting-edge carbon composite body panels, the vehicle achieved a remarkable power-to-weight ratio of just 4.21 kg/PS.

High-Output Heart: Powered by an enhanced 2.2L engine churning out 260 PS, mated to a ultra-precise close-ratio 6-speed transmission.

Chassis Rigidity: Overall chassis torsional rigidity was boosted by over 10%, providing immediate steering response and uncompromising stability.

Proven on the Track
The results of this obsessive engineering spoke for themselves where it mattered most: Tsukuba Circuit. The Mugen RR Advanced Concept threw down a blistering lap time of 1’04.906 around Tsukuba’s TC2000 layout—a staggering benchmark for a naturally aspirated, front-wheel-drive platform.

Having this masterpiece under our roof and sharing it in person with the Midwest Honda community during Dyno Day is a memory we’ll never forget. The MUGEN RR ADVANCED CONCEPT remains a timeless symbol of what’s possible when pure engineering meets unrestrained ambition.

King Motorsports build ‘92 Prelude in Honda Tuning!

Let’s take a look back at a iconic feature from the September 2013 issue of Honda Tuning Magazine, written by Brian McGurk with photos by Ginash George.

Titled “The Kings: Continuing Their Winning Ways,” this piece highlights the incredible motorsport heritage behind our 1992 fourth-gen Prelude.

A Pre-Production Legend with Championship Pedigree
Long before it was taking podiums, this exact chassis was one of just five pre-production VTEC test mules sent over to Honda USA in 1991. After spending time in the factory press fleet being put through its paces by automotive journalists, it made its natural transition straight into wheel-to-wheel competition.

SCCA Success: The chassis moved through several SCCA drivers and classes over the years, consistently taking top positions.

The E-Production Conversion: In 1998, the car was transformed into an SCCA E Production-spec racer, trading its original H22 for a non-VTEC H23 powerplant.

Dominant Season: The results spoke for themselves—by 1999, this Prelude achieved a sweep, winning every single race in its division, capped off with a victory at the SCCA Runoffs!

From early press fleet testing to championship-winning SCCA racing, this build truly embodies the race-bred spirit of 1990s Honda performance.
