25 years ago, America experienced a day that those of us who were alive will never forget. Most of us can remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we learned that our country was under attack.
We should also never forget who carried out those attacks: Islamist extremists motivated by a radical ideology that regarded Americans and other “infidels” as enemies. Remembering that reality is not hatred - it is history. As is Pearl Harbor, attacked from Japan nearly 85 years ago and had 2,403 casualties.
Twenty-five years later, Americans have every right to demand that our government take national security, immigration, and the threat of violent Islamist extremism seriously. Across the pond, Europe provides us with important lessons as well. Countries including Greece, France, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, and the United Kingdom have faced difficult debates over immigration, integration, radicalization, extremism, and terrorism.
There is an important distinction between peaceful Muslims and extremists who embrace violence or support terrorist ideology. But acknowledging that distinction should never require us to ignore genuine security threats or pretend radical Islamist terrorism doesn’t exist.
September 11, 2001, should have taught us that protecting our country requires vigilance, strong borders, effective vetting, and the willingness to confront extremist ideologies honestly.
We owe the nearly 3,000 people murdered that day at least that much. And the 9,000+ that later passed from the side effects of cancer etc.
