Why NOT to buy a Poulan. A customer brought me this saw and said it wouldn't start when hot. They had replaced the carburetor with an aftermarket unit, a cheap Chinese clone. I'd asked the customer if they had the factory carb, they did, and I got it with the saw. So I pulled the carb and plug and looked at the cylinder. All looked fine, so I pulled the factory carb apart and it had deformed diaphrams. So I ordered a factory kit, cleaned the carb (ultrasonic) rebuilt it and reinstalled it. Flushed the fuel tank and installed fresh fuel at the correct mix. Using factory carb settings, I tuned the saw, but it never did seem exactly right. Seemed to need constant adjustment, and no, it would not start when hot. So, on to the internet to check some known issues. I found ot these saws have two inherent issues. First, the muffler is VERY restricted. And, the factory carbs are set VERY lean. This leads to cylinder damage on the exhaust side. So I pulled the muffler and sure enough, the cylinder is scored. The saw has compression, will start and run however it will never be right. So now I eat this repair, as I should have pulled the muffler first to check both sides of the piston. Lesson learned-DO A COMPLETE DIAGNOSIS!!!!!!!!!!
