The LEO Diamond auger creates a square cutting design. When knives are correctly placed, bales and long roughage are forced downward into a high-pressure zone. This pressure drives the knives to cut efficiently, increasing processing speed while reducing fuel use and mix time. On twin-auger machines the pressure zone between the two augers further improves cutting from both sides.
Knife Placement Is Critical
Knife position must match the ration:

Ration Type Recommended Knife size for top 2 spots:

Pre-chopped roughage:
Auger = Large 2 piece knife ontop in "IN Position"
Contra/Side Knifes: IN Position

Round bales / Napier / Alfalfa (If your baler has built in knives)
Auger = Small knife on top and Large 2 Piece knife in "IN Position" in the next lower flex spot.
Contra/Side Knifes: Start in OUT Position and move to IN Position after 5 Minutes.

Round bales / Napier / Alfalfa (No cutting knives in baler)
Auger= Small knife on top and small knife in the next lower flex spot.
Contra/Side Knifes: Start in OUT Position and move to IN Position after 10 Minutes.

High-density silage: (little roughage)
Auger=Large knife on top

LEO ships every machine with a standard “catch-all” layout optimized for the most common roughage and round-bale rations.

The top knife positions are designed to accept multiple knife types so operators can fine-tune as they gain experience. The 2 piece knife blades themselves can also be adjusted in or out on the auger for optimum processing.

Key Operating Principles

The faster roughage reaches the middle and bottom high-pressure zones, the faster it processes.
More knives does not mean better cutting.
Round bales need space to drop into the cutting zone — they should not bob on top of the knives.
The core of the bale must transfer into the pressure spot for the fastest results.
A large knife in the top position can work with high-density silage mixes, but may cause spilling when processing whole round bales.

The LEO Diamond auger is intentionally flexible. Start with the standard configuration, then adjust knife layouts to match your specific rations for maximum efficiency.

LEO Auger Flow Innovations – Explained
The LEO vertical mixer auger is engineered with five specific features that work together to improve material flow, reduce horsepower demand, and deliver a more consistent TMR:

1. Slanted Auger Top
Eliminates the dead spot that normally forms on top of a conventional auger. Feed doesn’t sit on the auger cap, and the angled surface also acts as an extra mixing paddle.

2. Angled Ripping Blades
The blades are set at an aggressive angle to improve bale tearing and processing speed. Whole round or square bales are broken down faster with controlled cutting action.

3. Hockey Stick Kicker
The signature “hockey stick” shape acts like a cupped scoop. It actively sweeps material away from the side wall and lifts it onto the flighting — the key to eliminating wall dead zones and keeping the mixing chamber action strong. (Bolt-on available in 3 different sizes)

4. V-Shaped Leading Edge
Functions like a snow plow or grader blade. The angled leading edge naturally forces material toward the center of the auger instead of letting it pack against the wall. This reduces horsepower requirements and accelerates overall material flow.

5. Hay Knife Reliefs
Strategic cutaways in the flighting allow long-stem forage to fold over the knife edge (similar to folding a rope before cutting it). This makes cutting easier and more efficient while reducing stress on the knives and drive system.

Together these features give LEO mixers faster mix times, lower power demand, and more uniform rations compared with conventional vertical auger designs.
