What a week at the NCI High-Performance HVAC Summit!

Bill, Billy Spohn, and Josh had a great time connecting with contractors, catching up with industry friends, and talking tools in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee earlier this week.

Thanks to National Comfort Institute for another excellent Summit, and to everyone who stopped by to say hello!

I’m headed back to BS + B**r, and this time we’re taking it to Worcester!
On Monday, September 14 at 5:30 PM, I’ll be presenting “Energy Auditing Best Practices” at Building Evolution Corp. We’re going to get into how the Air Doctors team actually approaches an energy audit—from the process and techniques to the tools we use in the field to identify opportunities for better comfort, efficiency, and building performance.

I’ll be in Worcester for the US Heat Pump Summit, where I’m honored to be a keynote speaker, so we’re making this the official “unofficial event of the evening.”

If you’re coming to the Summit, come hang out with the building science geeks Monday night. We’ll talk blower doors, diagnostics, thermal imaging, energy auditing, and probably a whole lot of heat pumps.

“This is no longer a push-pull industry. This is a thinking person's game now.”

AI can be a powerful tool for HVAC technicians—but Tyler Nelson doesn’t teach technicians to reach for it before they’ve thought through the problem themselves.

In episode 283, Tyler explains how he uses AI to help technicians dig deeper into what they’re seeing, question the answers they receive, and build a stronger diagnostic thought process of their own.

“Net zero wasn't the goal—it was the outcome of making hundreds of good building science decisions.”

Bill Spohn didn’t begin with a standard he wanted to achieve. He began by asking what kind of home he and his family wanted to grow old in: comfortable, healthy, quiet, beautiful, affordable to operate, and gentle on the environment.

In episode 284 of Building HVAC Science, Bill shares how that personal performance goal ultimately led to a net-zero home.

Hey Friends! Happy , celebrating a day early for International Flashing Awareness Day!

How's this for a PHlashing PHail?
(PH in honor of Passive House, which does not recommend flashing fails)

Sure, this flashing probably keeps most rain out of the wall assembly. But does it keep heat inside the thermal barrier on cold winter nights? Apparently not.

Looking from street level, it's a little hard to tell, but the flashing with heat escaping below it may be a coping, as the wall plane steps back from the first floor to the second floor.

Flashings are important components in a building envelope's water barrier system. Since the problem we see here looks like air leakage or incomplete insulation behind the flashing, the cause of this thermal anomaly is more likely to be an incomplete air barrier or thermal barrier, not a problem with the flashing itself.

Here's the lesson, though: Covering up an incomplete air barrier or thermal barrier with flashing or other exterior finish material does not solve the problem - it only makes it hard to see the problem, and also hard to fix the problem!

What do you think about this issue? And what other interesting thermal things do you see in the photo?

The identity of this building is not disclosed, to protect the people associated with it. If you know what it is, please keep it to yourself or get in touch away from public posts. 😇
