A little bit of forge history.

Not everything in an old forge gets replaced when the equipment does.

Some of the buildings still contain signs, equipment, drawings & other remnants of the past.

We're still finding pieces of that history around Milwaukee ForgeTech.

What happens after the forging?

Not everything happens under the forging press.

Our machining department creates & rebuilds forging dies & also performs secondary machining on components when required.

Here, the cutting tool stays fixed & rigid while the table moves the workpiece through the programmed path. The tool removes a small amount of steel at a time, allowing for precise machining.

The change can be subtle, but watch closely & you can see the part taking shape.

No flash. No trimming.

This is flashless forging — the heated steel is formed directly in the die without producing the excess material normally removed during trimming.

Less material waste. Fewer process steps.

Sometimes, what doesn’t happen during forging is the interesting part.

3,000 tons of forging force.

Our 3,000-ton press is one of the machines that gives Milwaukee ForgeTech the ability to produce demanding forged components across a wide range of sizes and geometries.

And getting a press like this up and running is a pretty impressive process in itself.

Why preform a billet before forging?

Before a billet reaches the forging die, it may need to be shaped first.

Here, our team is using a hammer to preform the heated steel. This helps distribute the material so it can fill the die properly during the forging operation.

It's a small step in the process, but getting the material in the right shape before the final forging can make a big difference.

Forging vs. Casting: What’s the Difference?

Two processes can produce similar-looking parts. What happens inside the metal is a different story.

Forging shapes solid metal under compressive force, creating grain flow that follows the shape of the component. That can mean greater strength, fatigue resistance, and consistency.

Casting offers advantages of its own, particularly for complex shapes. But when a component has to withstand heavy loads and repeated stress, forging has a clear advantage.
