Iron wedges are helpful when select cutting. They help lay the tree exactly where it should be to avoid damaging other trees. I always use two wedges because sometimes one will bounce back, which could cause the tree to fall the wrong direction.

We’ve reached that weather where you don’t need the heat on all of the time, but the unheated basement is pretty chilly. A standing dead white oak harvested this morning will keep us comfortable this evening. Perks of the job, I guess.

Sometimes trees don’t do what you want them to do. Physics says this tree shouldn’t be standing. But the branches were intertwined with neighboring trees. And there it is.

Does anyone use reclaimed barn boards anymore? I’ve got some 1” painted red. Also 2x6 tongue and groove from silos—red or white. Additionally, have some interior paneling (thick stock) likely from late 18th or early 19th Centuries. There is some American chestnut sticking around here, too; both reclaimed and old stock never used. Firewood????

Massive white oak (30+” DBH) struck by lightning years ago. Mushrooms fruiting inside of it. Hoping it will produce acorns.
