It is a simple truth that things wear out; they are eventually in need of repair or replacement. Much of our mill has come to that point. We are at a crossroads and have some decisions to make. I’m asking for your input.

If you are a woodworker, does the mill your lumber was cut on matter to you? That is, do you care if the boards came from a production sawmill, a hobby bandmill, or a vintage relic? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please comment.

Occasionally, I will see videos of someone cutting a tree and then standing at the stump looking up while it falls. If the video is on a platform that allows comments, there are invariably frustrated commenters advising the feller to get away from the tree. This is why I always give trees plenty of room. Unexpected events may unfold. The butt of this tree is more than 10 feet behind the stump.

Don’t stand near falling trees.

This is a nurse stump. If you’re not familiar with the term, it’s the idea that at just the right stage of decomposition, an old stump becomes the perfect environment for germinating and nurturing new trees. We’ve had a brutal stretch of dry weather. These tiny birch seedlings are thriving in the rich organic matter.
