Our ARCH542B final review covered several topics regarding transcalar water systems in Los Angeles including: wastewater, the Arroyo Seco, the Los Angeles River and flood protection, Measure W.

This studio challenges students to engage water infrastructure as landscape itself—a medium through
which ecological performance, cultural meaning, and civic life can be negotiated. Through transcalar
analysis, representation, and design, students proposed new relationships between water systems
and landscape in a city where that relationship is both urgent and unresolved.

Over the past four years, USC MLA+U Professor Alison Hirsch and her research team at The Landscape Justice Initiative have been working with the Allensworth Progressive Association .pa on the Allensworth Community Plan, which was unanimously approved by Tulare County Board of Supervisors last week. Long deemed a ‘hamlet’ by the county, this new plan and designation sets a path for Allensworth’s future that builds on its visionary past as California’s only Black Freedom Colony (founded in 1908). The plan is a roadmap for Allensworth to arrive at climate-resilient rural self-sufficiency and a model for rural communities in the lower Central Valley.

Thank you to the APA, ACSD, Allensworth community, students, and partners for this rich collaboration and congratulations to the APA for this incredible achievement. Special thanks to research assistant, Jaab Veskijkul for making this video and being a dedicated member of the LJI team!

Grateful for the opportunity that our students were able to participate in through the Case Study Investigation program!

The team, including Ashley Stephens ‘26, Jordan Fucci ‘25, and our director Esther Margulies, worked with the design firm MIG to study the performance of the recently revitalized Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park. From site visits and staff interviews to tools like i-Tree and public works data, they explored how the park has been improving community wellbeing as well as ecological health.

Thank you to everyone at who helped gather drawings, photos, and insight on design scope. The final report will be published soon and the team will present their findings during a webinar and Q&A this upcoming November. Congratulations to this team and stay tuned!

🚐 Van trip to Little Harbor overlook & James H. Ackerman Native Plant Nursery
🪨 Visit to Tongva soapstone bowl quarry
🥾 Ben Weston nature hike and beach
