We’re proud of our rich history, including our role in helping the United States and its allies win World War II. By 1942, the C.L. Gougler Machine Company [predecessor of FRD-USA] needed to ramp up production after being awarded several government contracts to manufacture aircraft and armament parts. The company moved into a vacant facility on Lake Street in Kent, which still remains FRD’s location. With a reputation for machining and manufacturing excellence and awards from the armed forces to back it up, the company grew to employ more than 2,000 workers at 10 different locations around Kent.

Started in a garage in Kent, Ohio, nearly 100 years ago, FRD-USA has a rich history with roots in machining and injection molding. Charles L. Gougler founded the C.L. Gougler Machine Company in 1924 after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, where he was trained to be a machinist. Running a machine shop in his garage didn’t sit well with his neighbors, who complained about the noise. He moved to a small facility on North River Road, which would later be renamed Gougler Avenue. This is the first in a series of posts about our storied history.

Need more control than a bucket alone can provide?

Mechanical thumbs turn excavators into versatile material handlers, gripping rocks, debris, brush, and demolition material with precision. Acting as an opposing jaw, they secure loads for safer lifting, sorting, and placement—without leaving the cab.

FRD USA’s F-Check™ Instant Identification System makes it simple to get immediate access to information on hydraulic breakers, plate compactors and Tier IV drills. Every piece of FRD USA equipment has a color-coded sticker with a QR code. Just scan it and you’re instantly connected to information on:

• Identifying an attachment’s size and configuration
• Obtaining drill specifications
• Confirming service-hour information pertaining to a drill’s consumables

Did you know that every piece of FRD USA equipment features at least one color-coded sticker with a QR code? Whether it’s sitting on a dealer lot or being used out in the field, the QR code connects users directly to specific product pages or maintenance reminders. It’s part of the F-Check™ Instant Identification System, and it’s designed to boost efficiency for both operators and FRD dealers.

What if there was a way to optimize operations by being able to immediately access information on hydraulic breakers, plate compactors and Tier IV drills? There is. It’s FRD USA’s F-Check™ Instant Identification System. It’s as simple as scanning the QR code on a color-coded sticker on each piece of equipment using a smartphone, which connects directly to specific product pages or maintenance reminders.

Imagine one hydraulic breaker being used seamlessly with many carriers. John Deere, Case, Caterpillar and more. Name the carrier, make and model, and chances are a hydraulic breaker from FRD USA will easily attach without the need for separate brackets. Our patented Switch Hitch™ technology eliminates the need for separate OEM-specific topcaps. Simply spin the Switch Hitch dial with the right sized bushings for the stick width and the same hammer easily attaches to many carriers. Wider or narrower linkages are no obstacle.

Breakers and carriers can live in harmony with the patented Switch Hitch™ from FRD USA. There’s no need to worry about separate OEM-specific pin center brackets to attach the same FRD breaker to different carriers. It’s as simple as spinning the Switch Hitch disc in the breaker’s side plate to the OEM-specific center dimension of the carrier and then attaching the breaker in the usual way. The same design also increases “tuck” for better over the road transport and aids in loading and unloading of the equipment.

Because most construction and demolition companies have more than one brand of backhoe or excavator, switching hydraulic breakers typically requires separate OEM-specific pin center brackets. That’s because pin spacing and the link between carriers are slightly different. FRD USA introduced the innovative Switch Hitch™ side plate mounting system more than 20 years ago to eliminate the need for separate brackets for each carrier. This patented system has been making breaker attachments easier to use ever since, eliminating the need to keep more parts on site or at the shop, and saving valuable time making the switch.
