Honesty is our Character Core of the Month!

We have all heard the phrase, “Honesty is the best policy.” Though we may think it a bit cliché, this phrase holds a truth that many people choose to ignore. While it may be hard to always tell the truth, being honest has many benefits, as shown by https://www.minimalismmadesimple.com/home/honesty-is-the-best-policy/:
1. It shows a lot about your character.
2. It makes your life easier.
3. It shows respect and strengthens relationships.
4. It makes your opinion more valuable and credible.
5. It provides authenticity.
6. It provides consistency.
Abraham Lincoln was known to be an honest man. There are stories told of him returning pennies to customers when he was a young store clerk and realized he had shortchanged them. That honesty followed him into his adulthood. He would tell potential lawyers, "Resolve to be honest at all events; and if in your judgment you cannot be an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer.” The next time any of us are tempted to stretch the truth, let us remember that being truthful is best and right. As William Shakespeare stated, “No legacy is so rich as honesty.”

is our Customer of the Month!

Yoder Thrift Shop, located at 9815 S Main St in Yoder, opened in November of 2020 by a group of local people who felt there was a need for a thrift store in Yoder. They wanted to sell gently used items at a fair price, and they wanted to serve Christ and the community. The proceeds from the shop go to the Haven Food Bank, Hands of Christ, SHARE Haiti, and other community interests. Last year alone they donated $76,000 to various ministries. The shop is primarily run by volunteers who generously give of their time!

Yoder Thrift Shop is a great store to find nice, donated items. They have clothing, household items, furniture, books, and more! One customer stated, “We love this store! Wonderful people and lots of nice bargains!”

If you want to see some of the items and keep up with what is on sale, you can follow them on Facebook or Instagram shop. They are open from Tuesday- Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Happy Kansas Day!

On January 29, 1861, Kansas became the 34th state. With its wide expanse of wheat and sunflower fields, the big blue sky, and friendly people, Kansas is a great place to live.

As Dorothy said, "There's no place like home."

Trustworthiness is our Character Core of the Month!

Have you ever met someone and soon sensed that the person was trustworthy? What was it about them that caused you to trust their intentions? Was it because they said that you could trust them, or was it because their actions said you could trust them? When trying to build or regain trust, the proverb, “Actions speak louder than words”, is the best advice.

Trust is the base of any meaningful relationship. It is the glue that holds our small world together. Trust solidifies friendships and teams. It allows people to live and work together and provides a sense of belonging and safety.

If you are looking for specific ways to build or regain trust, here are a few ideas on how you can make your “Actions speak louder than words.”

1. Be True to your Word.
Say what you will do, then follow through with it. If you only do half of the things that you say you will do, it is difficult for your friends and family to know when to believe you. Earn the reputation of being someone who won’t break his/her commitments.
2. Be Consistent.
Consistency brings stability to any relationship. It brings a sense of predictability and reliability that is essential to meaningful relationships.
3. Develop Good Communication Skills.
Communication is one of the most important components of trust. It is difficult for people with differing communication styles to completely understand each other without a conscious effort. When the conversation is a disagreement or negotiation it is especially important to never leave the conversation until everyone is on the same page.
4. Think of what your Body Language and Facial Expressions are saying.
Ever since we were little, we automatically began to learn how to read other people’s body language and facial expressions. As we get older, we can subconsciously make decisions on whether someone is telling the truth or not. You can read people’s feelings from across the room.

Trust is a choice that is based on people’s actions, and occasionally people’s words. If a relationship is important to you, do your best to earn and keep the trust of the other person. This trust is difficult to describe, but it is easy to see when the trust is broken. Broken trust causes fragmentation, conflict, and suspicion. Earned trust gives people a reputation of credibility and dependability.

Positivity is our Character Core of the Month!

Nearly every day, something happens that makes us grumpy, discontented, or unhappy. Given enough time, those happenings can cause our minds to only focus on the negative and can make our attitude ungrateful. Winston Churchill once said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

Some steps for cultivating a positive attitude:

Practice Gratitude
There are bound to be negative circumstances or interactions that change our response to a situation. But choosing to find something to be grateful for, even something small like beautiful weather or a chat with a friend can help to reorient our focus. If our attitude is positive, we can more easily see the positive things that happen to us and around us.

Laugh
One study, conducted by the Biomedical Research and Therapy Journal, found that “Laughter also increases the oxygen supply to cells of the body and increases blood circulation…” The study also mentioned that the participants experienced lower levels of anxiety overall. Laughing not only helps you feel better, it actually is good for you!

Spend time with positive people
Even just a few minutes with a critical and ungrateful person can make you feel less grateful and positive. People with a happy, cheery attitude always seem to make a situation better and help others have a more positive attitude.

As Zig Ziglar said, “Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.”
