Thompson Lumber

Thompson Lumber Local Sawmill The Thompson family did not start out in the business of milling lumber. They started out as dairy farmers.

In 1956 Big Jim Thompson bought his first portable sawmill. It ran part time while he still ran the farm. In 1958 Jim went full time and moved the mill to various woodlots throughout Southern New England. In 1969, Jim bought the land where the sawmill is still located and built his home across the street out of the lumber he milled. In 1970, Jim bought his first semi-automatic mill at a logging ex

po in Manchester NH. In the Mid 1980's Big Jim decided to retire and let his children run the business. In the 90's His two sons Jim and Alan started the process of buying and running the fully automated mill, which is the one they use today. Today the business is run by the oldest son Jim. The business has expanded over the years and specializes in hard and softwood for post & beam structures and custom sawing for homeowners and the pallet industry. In 1986 the first debarker was purchased. Selling bark mulch became a very big part of the business. Along with woodchips and sawdust, it was also a green way to use all the by-products of the trees. The purchase of a fellabuncher rounded out the fleet of machinery to begin landclearing as a service. In 1996, the fully automated mill began churning out 2-3 million board feet of lumber each year. Thompson's has been in continuous operation since 1958 and employs about 15 people year-round still serving the public with the best in native wood products.
