Wastewater treatment systems are becoming more sophisticated, but finding experienced operators to run them isn’t getting any easier.

At the same time, food and beverage manufacturers are looking for ways to reduce operating costs, improve reliability, and maintain consistent compliance.

That’s where smarter automation can make a big difference.

Real-time monitoring, automated controls, optimized aeration, predictive alarms, and better process visibility can help facilities identify issues sooner and reduce the amount of hands-on operator intervention required.

The result? A more stable system, lower energy use, more consistent treatment performance, and greater confidence in day-to-day operations.

Because the future of wastewater treatment isn’t just about treating water - it’s about treating it smarter.

We recently gathered for our August employee potluck lunch — complete with plenty of food, some time outside, and a grill that was definitely put to work.

Our summer cookouts are one of the ways we make time to get everyone together, catch up, and enjoy each other’s company away from the usual workday.

Thanks to everyone who brought a dish, manned the grill, or simply showed up hungry!

What does it take to incorporate wastewater reuse into a new brewery? A good idea is only the beginning.

When Boulder Jct. Brewing Co. began planning its new facility in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, they knew they wanted to serve top quality beer and support the local community socially and economically, while respecting and enhancing the local environment. Their vision included treating wastewater for non-potable reuse in applications such as facility washdowns and toilet flushing - helping conserve potable water while making better use of an existing resource.

Turning that vision into reality required more than treatment equipment. It also meant navigating regulatory requirements, evaluating technical considerations, and securing approval from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

That’s where The Probst Group came in.

Our team provided permitting and consulting support to help Boulder Junction Brewing Company move its water reuse plans through the regulatory approval process. By working through the technical and compliance requirements early, the ownership team was able to incorporate reuse into the facility’s overall design and operational strategy.

In January 2026, Boulder Junction Brewing Company opened its doors and began serving both the local community and visitors to Wisconsin’s Northwoods, and is quickly becoming a community hub with top quality beer and a welcoming atmosphere.
Projects like this demonstrate that our expertise extends well beyond designing and constructing wastewater treatment systems. From permitting and regulatory strategy to compliance consulting and water reuse planning, we help clients move innovative ideas from concept to approval - and ultimately, into operation.

Because the best wastewater solutions don’t just meet requirements. They support the client’s broader vision for how their facility should operate.

When we talk about permitting requirements for wastewater treatment, the focus is usually on parameters for phosphorus, nitrogen, BOD, TSS and pH.

Temperature often gets overlooked.

But, for food and beverage facilities that discharge treated effluent directly to rivers, streams, or lakes, find that summer weather can cause concerns over the temperature of the water they're returning to the environment.
