What first sparked your interest in architecture?

At last month’s Iowa Conference, we had the opportunity to talk with Tori Nemesio from in Mason City, Iowa, about what led her to the profession.

Tori knew from a young age that she wanted to be an architect. With a love for math and numbers, along with a creative side, architecture offered a way to bring both interests together.

We often think of people as either analytical or creative, but architecture is a great example of how those two ways of thinking can work together.

We enjoyed hearing about Tori’s passion for architecture and some of the projects she’s currently working on.

Your aluminum weld can look perfect before anodizing—and still come back the wrong color. 🫣

So, what should architects and fabricators consider when designing welded aluminum products that will be anodized?

When color matching anodized elements is important, ER5356 is a commonly selected filler metal. ER5356 is a 5% magnesium aluminum filler alloy used for both TIG and MIG welding and can produce a light silver/white appearance after anodizing that blends well with architectural aluminum alloys such as 5052 and 6061.

ER4043 is also a commonly used filler metal to weld aluminum but can produce a noticeably darker gray appearance if it is anodized. Due to these color match differences, architects and fabricators need to understand the desired finish application process before any welding begins.

If the finished aluminum will be anodized, the base-metal alloy, filler-metal chemistry, and desired finish all need to be considered during fabrication to produce a weld that will color match the surrounding metal elements.

As part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) reconstruction of the John Ireland Boulevard Bridge in St. Paul, StellarCraft fabricated 26 custom decorative steel pedestal assemblies that are now part of the completed bridge.

Fabricated from 3/8-inch A36 steel plate, the assemblies included:

• 14 pedestals with cast-steel ball tops
• 12 pedestals without ball tops
• Approximately 765 lbs. per finished assembly
• Galvanized and powder-coated finishes

This project highlights several of our in-house capabilities, including heavy plate fabrication, precision fitting and welding, complex custom assemblies, integration of cast-steel components, and coordination of multi-step architectural finishing.

We are excited to see the John Ireland Boulevard Bridge be put to use this week as the finish line for the 2026 Twin Cities Marathon on October 4 🏃‍♂️

Carleton College Case Study | Apollo Perforated Steel Guardrail

With over 330 panels this interior guardrail system was custom designed and fabricated for the newly constructed Evelyn Anderson Hall on the campus of Carleton College.
