We’re incredibly proud of the Comfort Technology team and grateful for the skill, effort, and care they bring into homes across Hampton Roads every day.

To our team—and to everyone who works hard to keep our community moving—Happy Labor Day!

Should I Turn My AC Down Before Labor Day Guests Arrive? ☕️ SATURDAY MORNINGS: Ask Lee!

Every Saturday morning, Lee answers one of your real HVAC questions right here.

Today’s Question:

“Lee — we’re having people over for Labor Day weekend. Should I lower the thermostat before everyone arrives?”

Lee’s Answer:

Short answer — yes, but only by a couple of degrees.

A house full of people can warm up faster than you might expect. Cooking, opening doors, and extra body heat all add to the workload on your air conditioner.

Lowering the thermostat two or three degrees about an hour before guests arrive gives your system a head start before the house fills up.

A few other ways to help your AC keep everyone comfortable:

✅ Replace a dirty air filter before the weekend

✅ Use ceiling fans to keep air moving

✅ Keep exterior doors closed as much as possible

✅ Use the grill instead of the oven when you can

✅ Close blinds or curtains where direct sunlight heats the house

Just don’t crank the thermostat down to 60°. Your AC won’t cool the house any faster—it will simply keep running until it reaches the setting.

Give the system a small head start, keep the air moving, and enjoy your Labor Day weekend.

How long should your AC realistically last on the peninsula and Hampton Roads?

Salt air. Humidity. Six months of heavy cooling load. Our climate is harder on HVAC equipment than almost anywhere else on the East Coast — and most homeowners don’t find that out until their system starts struggling.

We wrote up the full breakdown — what affects lifespan, what extends it, and what signs tell you your system is running out of runway.

Our Summer Comfort Event is also almost over. If you’ve been considering a new system, now is the time to take advantage of up to $1,000 off, 0% financing, and two years of maintenance included.

Call 757-599-9700 before the offer ends.

How Long Should an AC System Last in Hampton Roads? ☕️ SATURDAY MORNINGS: Ask Lee!

Every Saturday morning, Lee answers one of your real HVAC questions right here.

Today’s Question:

“Lee — I’ve heard AC systems should last 15–20 years. Is that true for Hampton Roads?”

Lee’s Answer:

I appreciate the question — and the honest answer is that 15–20 years is optimistic for most Hampton Roads homes.

Here’s why:

Our climate is genuinely harder on HVAC equipment than most of the country. Three things work against us:

👉 Salt air — We’re close to the coast, and salt accelerates corrosion on coil fins, copper lines, and electrical components. This is real and it adds up over time.

👉 Humidity — Hampton Roads regularly hits 80–90% outdoor humidity in summer. Your AC isn’t just cooling the air — it’s pulling moisture out continuously. That’s extra work, and it wears equipment faster.

👉 Run time — In our climate, systems run heavily from May through October. That’s six months of serious demand every year. A system in Arizona might run hard for three months. Ours runs twice as long.

In my experience, well-maintained systems in Hampton Roads typically perform reliably for 12–15 years. Some make it longer. Some don’t make it that far, especially if maintenance has been inconsistent.

What extends lifespan:

✅ Annual maintenance checks

✅ Regular filter changes (more often if you cook a lot or have pets)

✅ Keeping the outdoor unit clear of debris

✅ Addressing small repairs before they become big ones

If your system is 12+ years old, I’d start paying closer attention. It may have years left — but it’s worth knowing what you’re working with.
