Somerville Architects & Engineers

Somerville Architects & Engineers Creating inspired buildings and environments that improve the lives of our clients and communities. It helps them do what they do better. More efficiently.

A well-designed building doesn’t merely allow those inside it to do what they do. More effectively. These are the type of buildings that Somerville creates. We do this by asking the right questions, paying careful attention to the answers and responding with thoughtful solutions. We feel that buildings aren’t so much built with bricks, metal and glass, but with listening, experience and imaginatio

n. We believe that a building’s true beauty lies in the thinking that goes into it. Every detail, every decision at every step along the way – it all counts in the final design. And if there’s one thing we know at Somerville, it’s that design matters.

Our “People Behind the Projects” series continues this month as we shine a light on the talented team members who make Somerville what it is. These features give you a chance to get to know the people behind our work, their stories, perspectives, and passions inside and outside the office. It’s all part of what makes our team, and our culture, uniquely Somerville.

Tammy Deterville | Senior Architectural Drafter

How long have you been with Somerville? 7 years

What ’s your favorite project you ’ve worked on here, and why? The MPTC Horicon Fire training facility, because it was a new building and I was the main drafter on it.

What ’s a skill you ’ve developed the most since joining Somerville? Since joining Somerville, I’ve grown my Revit skills the most and have become much more comfortable working in it.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work? Traveling, going up north, kayaking, crocheting, quilting, and cross-stitch.

What ’s a hobby or passion people might be surprised to learn about? Last year I finished an heirloom quilt that I started about 35 years ago! Heirloom means that it was all stitched by hand, no machine. It was shelved for many years (because life happens), but I had been working on it pretty steady the last 5 years.

Favorite place you ’ve ever visited? I don’t think I really have a favorite, everywhere I’ve gone has something wonderful about it, but if I had to choose, probably Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany.

What makes Somerville a place where people stay and grow? Somerville appreciates the work we do, it’s a place where you feel valued and are able to grow.

Check back next month for our next feature with Director of Marketing and Branding, Heather Nohr-Valley!

80 years ago, on May 25, 1946, John E. Somerville opened a small architectural practice with just three employees. The firm’s very first commission was for the Great Lakes Shoe Company in Oconto, Wisconsin, the beginning of a legacy that would shape communities across the region for generations to come.

Today, Somerville Architects and Engineers is proud to celebrate 80 years of inspired design, meaningful partnerships, and community impact. From schools and healthcare facilities to community spaces, workplaces, and beyond, our projects have always been about more than buildings, they are about improving lives and helping our clients and communities succeed.

As we reflect on this milestone, we are especially grateful for the incredible people who have made Somerville what it is today. Our innovative and creative work begins with our employees, the talented architects, engineers, designers, and support staff who bring passion, expertise, and care to every project. Their dedication to collaboration, creativity, and client partnerships continues to drive our mission forward.

In September 2025, we proudly moved into our newly designed office building at 2120 Riverside Drive, marking the completion of Somerville’s fourth office building along the Fox River. While much has changed since 1946, our values remain the same: genuineness, creativity, expertise, ownership, quality of life, and lasting partnerships.

As a 100% employee-owned firm, we take immense pride in the work we do and the relationships we build. Thank you to our employees, clients, partners, and communities for being part of our story over the past 80 years. We are humbled by your trust and excited for what the future holds.

Last week, we took a little break to let teamwork fly ✈️

As one of our Mental Health Awareness Month activities, we hosted a paper airplane contest, and yes, it got competitive fast. Teams had just five minutes to design and build their planes before heading outside to our patio to see whose could fly the farthest.

After three rounds, Sam Graner and Chloe Meulemans took the top spot! Congratulations! 🏆

Events like these are a fun reminder that collaboration, creativity, and a little friendly competition help build stronger relationships across our team, and strong relationships are at the heart of everything we do.

FEATURED PROJECT: Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry | Office and Facade Renovation | Manitowoc, Wisconsin

There’s just something satisfying about a dramatic before & after transformation. 👏

The renovation of Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry’s office and facade completely reimagined an outdated, disconnected workspace into a modern environment designed for collaboration, flexibility, and future growth.

The interior transformation opened up the office with improved flow, increased natural light, open workspaces, private glass-walled offices, and flexible breakout areas for meetings and teamwork. Industrial-inspired finishes, exposed structure, natural wood elements, and modern lighting were thoughtfully incorporated to reflect the foundry’s history while creating an inviting workplace.

The exterior also underwent significant improvements, including new window openings, refreshed brick and metal materials, aluminum sunshades, and a more welcoming accessible entrance, creating a cohesive look that reflects the innovation happening inside.

Does your space need a facelift? Let’s talk about what’s possible!
