October is Fire Prevention Month and here's a tip from us here at Hwy 83 Lawn & Leisure:
You should replace your smoke detector every 10 years from the date of manufacture, or sooner if the manufacturer recommends it.
Here’s a quick guide:
Every 10 years: Replace the entire smoke alarm, even if it still seems to work.
Once a month: Test the alarm using its test button.
Once a year: Replace the batteries if your alarm uses replaceable batteries, unless the manufacturer specifies a different schedule. Replace them immediately if the alarm chirps to indicate a low battery.
As needed: Replace an alarm that fails testing, is damaged, or repeatedly malfunctions.
How to know if yours needs replacing: Check the manufacture date printed on the back of the alarm. If it's more than 10 years old, replace it. If you can't find the date, it's safest to replace an alarm of unknown age.
One important tip: Smoke alarms with sealed 10-year batteries still need the entire unit replaced when they reach the end of their service life.
For the best protection, install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions and local fire-safety requirements.
