Heritage Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortar ➡️ NHL 3.5 — is a moderately hydraulic, factory-blended bedding and pointing mortar engineered for solid load-bearing masonry built before portland cement entered the trade.
No cement. No polymers. No admixes. Only NHL 3.5, engineered aggregate, and mineral pigment where specified.
What it actually does:
🔹 Stays permeable, so the wall continues to breathe
🔹 Stays flexible, so it absorbs thermal and structural movement instead of transferring it into the masonry
🔹 Performs in severe exposure — parapets, chimneys, basements, walls hit hardest by freeze-thaw and salt migration
🔹 Carries only trace soluble salts, reducing sulfate attack and alkali-silica reaction risk
🔹 Conforms to EN459, ASTM C1713, and NPS Preservation Brief #2
For preservation architects, conservators, and contractors working on pre-1900 buildings, this is not a product preference. It is a material compatibility decision. The right mortar protects the original fabric. The wrong one destroys it.
If you are specifying repointing for a historic structure and you are not certain which lime grade the wall calls for, that conversation should happen before the bid goes out — not after the first lift fails.
US Heritage Group offers specifier education, project-specific technical guidance, and custom aggregate and color matching so the new mortar matches what is already in the wall.
