In masonry restoration, quality control should not begin at the end of the project.

Under a microscope 🔬 a 90-year-old mortar.

Three samples came from a 1930s university building in Missouri. Same era, same appearance to the eye — until we ran the analysis.

👉Samples 1 and 3 share the same aggregate, likely from the same original sand pit.
👉Sample 2 is finer, from a different source, with a different binder ratio.

At some point in the last 90 years, someone repaired part of this wall with a mortar that no longer matches the original.

Custom matching starts here: chemistry, magnification, sieve gradation, compressive testing — before any color decision is made. The mortar itself tells you what to specify.

🏛️ The breathtaking Nagara-style architecture of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett, Illinois, is a marvel of hand-carved Turkish limestone. We recently visited this monumental Hindu temple to conduct an on-site training. Looking closely at the incredibly intricate spires, carved deities, and delicate friezes, one cannot help but admire the immense craftsmanship that went into every square inch of this sacred space.

During the hands-on session, we focused on evaluating the exterior stone and teaching specialized techniques to monitor and restore the delicate carvings. Understanding how this unique limestone responds to the elements is essential for preserving its brilliant white finish and sharp, ornamental details for generations to come.

It is a combination of specification, material, workmanship, color, texture, and field conditions.

On paper, a repair strategy may seem correct, but in the field, the wall can give more information.

A proper mockup allows the project team to inspect:

Limewash behaves differently from paint - the color in the bucket dries several shades lighter than it appears wet, cures over several days, and only reaches its final tone once the calcite crystals fully form.
🔹 What you see on day 1 is not what you will live with on day 30.
That is why color decisions on a limewash project cannot be made from a bucket, a chip, or a shop swatch alone. The sample — whether applied directly to the wall, on prepared brick panel — has to be evaluated against the actual building, in its own light, against its own texture, next to its existing tones. Only that comparison shows how the chosen color will really behave once installed.
There is also a chemistry limit. Only certain pigments hold in limewash. Earth pigments — iron oxides, ochres, umbers — resist UV and do not react with the alkaline lime.
The comparison on the building settles the question. Everything before it is preview.

Skipping analysis can make restoration more expensive later.
In large restoration projects, the cost of skipping analysis rarely appears immediately.

It often shows up later: during mockup approval, during construction, or years after the repair is complete.

A mortar may look close enough in color but behave differently in the wall.
A repair may meet a general specification but fail to match the original material system.
A contractor may be asked to perform work without enough information about what the building actually requires.
