Heritage Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortar ➡️ NHL 3.5 — is a moderately hydraulic, factory-blended bedding and pointing mortar engineered for solid load-bearing masonry built before portland cement entered the trade.

No cement. No polymers. No admixes. Only NHL 3.5, engineered aggregate, and mineral pigment where specified.

What it actually does:

Mortar selection is not a catalog decision.
Before selecting any formulation, we evaluate the following:

✔ Original composition: binder type, aggregate grading, color and mineral structure, original ratio, and workmanship

✔ Physical behavior: relative strength and hardness, flexibility, v***r permeability, moisture transfer patterns

✔ Environmental exposure: freeze–thaw cycles, salt exposure, orientation and weathering, long-term maintenance realities

Historic masonry performs as a system. A repair mortar must support that system — not override it.
The goal is not to choose the strongest material. The goal is to choose the most compatible one.

Most people look at historic brick buildings and notice the brick.

Architects often look at the joints.

But conservators know that mortar is what truly defines the wall.

The color, grain size, binder composition, and permeability of mortar determine not only how a façade looks — but also how it performs over time.

When mortar is replaced with something incompatible, the consequences can be subtle at first:

- hairline cracking, trapped moisture, and spalling brick faces.

On this project, our team developed multiple mortar samples to match the original joints in color, aggregate texture, and permeability. Each sample was tested directly on the façade to evaluate how it behaves in natural light and alongside the historic brick.

Because successful restoration is not about making the repair visible.
It’s about making it disappear.

And sometimes the most important material on a building is the one people rarely notice.
