The Conditions Decide the Method

Ground and material, hole size, depth, and application all play a role in choosing the best drilling method for a specific jobsite.

Hard rock may call for down-the-hole (DTH) or percussion drilling, while softer soils may be better suited for auger or rotary drilling. Rock face drilling, slope stabilization, anchoring, coring, casing, and other specialized applications may require different tooling or drilling methods depending on the project specifications.

So, how do you choose the right drilling method?

Start with what you’re drilling through, how large and deep the hole needs to be, where the drilling is taking place, and what the finished hole needs to accomplish.

WORD Rock Drills offers drilling systems that can be configured for a wide range of applications, helping contractors match the drilling method and equipment to the conditions they encounter in the field.

Taking rock anchor installation to a whole different level.

The Maine Drilling & Blasting team is putting a WORD Rock Drills HXDFR5 to work on a rock stabilization project where access is anything but ordinary.

Mounted to a high-reach crane capable of reaching up to 150 feet, the drill was positioned approximately 60 feet in the air and 40 feet out to reach the top of the ridgeline. From there, the crew is drilling 3-inch-diameter holes ranging from 12 to 50 feet deep for rock anchors designed to help secure the rock face above a new building site.

And this is only one section of the project. Thousands of holes will be drilled before the work is complete.

When the drilling location is hard to reach, versatility becomes part of the solution.

Today, we’re proud to celebrate a very special milestone for Ron Sockwell, our Director of Product Development, as he marks 10 years with WORD Rock Drills!

Over the past decade, Ron has played an important role in the growth and evolution of WORD. His experience, creativity, and deep understanding of drilling have helped turn ideas into solutions, solve challenges in the field, and continue pushing our equipment forward.

But Ron’s impact goes well beyond product development. He’s someone our team can turn to for knowledge, perspective, and a willingness to dig into a problem until there’s a way forward. His dedication to our customers, our equipment, and the people around him has left a lasting mark on WORD.

Ten years represents countless ideas, conversations, challenges solved, machines improved, and lessons shared along the way. We’re incredibly grateful for everything Ron has poured into WORD over the last decade and for the role he continues to play in where we’re headed next.

Congratulations on 10 years, Ron! We’re thankful to have you as part of the WORD family and excited for the years ahead.

Thompson Electric, Inc. Ohio is putting their WORD EX540 to work in Ebensburg, PA, drilling 48 feet deep with a 2” bit as part of the installation of a grounding grid around a substation.

When the job calls for depth, precision, and the ability to keep moving around an active site, the EX540 is built to get after it. It’s just another solid application of a WORD drill helping Make a Way from the ground down.

It’s amazing seeing where our drills have been over the years, especially when the jobsite comes with a backdrop like this. Ryan and the team at RDI Construction have had their EX125 WORD drill since 2019, using it for many marine construction projects including dock work, seawalls, etc.

We recently had the chance to spend some time with Ryan and his team in the field, giving their WORD drill a little attention and making sure it was ready to keep doing what it does best. When our team got back, the Marketing sleuths couldn’t help but flip through RDI’s socials and look back at some of their project photos - and found a few favorites that were too good not to share.

From one waterfront project to the next, this drill has certainly worked in some beautiful places.

Big foundation work happening in Minneapolis.

George was onsite recently, alongside Joe from Intech, supporting one of our customers as they install micropile and hollow bar foundation systems for a Metro Transit maintenance facility expansion.

Projects like this are a great example of what strong field support looks like: the right equipment, the right technical support, and the right people working together onsite to keep the job moving.

Proud to have WORD represented in the field and helping support the work from the ground down.

One of the best parts of Deep Foundations Institute's DFI: S3 was reconnecting with people who go way back with WORD.

During one of those conversations, we were lucky enough to get these jobsite photos from 2014, featuring an older WORD Drill at work on a utility project.

There’s something pretty cool about seeing one of our drills from more than a decade ago and getting a glimpse back at the work it was doing then.

We’re grateful these photos were held onto and even more grateful they made their way back to us all these years later.

A little piece of WORD history, straight from the jobsite.

Happy 1st WORDiversary, Michael Duffey! Today we’re celebrating Michael and his first year as part of the WORD team.

As a Shipping and Receiving Clerk, Michael helps keep things moving behind the scenes, making sure parts, materials, and shipments get where they need to go. His role is an important part of keeping our shop organized, our team supported, and our drills moving one step closer to the field.

Over the past year, Michael has become a valued part of the team, bringing dependability, a helpful attitude, and steady support to the daily flow of WORD. Congratulations on 1 year with WORD, Michael! We’re thankful to have you on the team and excited to celebrate this milestone with you.

Against the backdrop of Mount Sneffels, Colorado, Thorcon is putting their WORD Rock Drill to work on a hollow bar installation for a home foundation.

It’s the kind of project that shows just how rewarding this work can be. Challenging ground, precision drilling, and at the end of the day, knowing the work happening below the surface is helping create a solid foundation for someone’s future home.

And when this is your jobsite? Not a bad place to spend the day.

Great work by the Thorcon Shotcrete and Shoring crew, and thanks for taking WORD along for the stunning view.
