Recovery day!

I slept in this morning until it hurt more to stay in bed than it would to get up. The transfer station took more hours than I wanted —> 16 hour days. That’s a lot back to back.

I’m working out a plan to streamline next weekend to get the hours down.

I need to get back to the feller buncher repair first thing tomorrow.

I ran some errands… grabbed some more material for the transfer station… stopped at harbor freight for some tools… snagged some BBQ!

Home now. Here’s a pile of pics.

Details in the captions.

BBQ ALERT. 🚨
.for the locals.

My friend Dez has his food truck and smoker setup at 107 College Ave in Waterville.

Here’s how it works…. You give him money. He gives you smoked bbq ribs. Happiness ensues… the world is a better place.

Casella transfer station phase 2, day 1, in the books. 💥

Big ole thank you to Rob from RNS for signing up to tackle this with me at the last minute! RNS Fabrication & Welding LLC

We’ve got four days… two weekends… to demo and install this new hopper. No matter what it takes… half gets demoed and replaced each weekend. This facility is up and running full steam ahead Monday morning.

Chasing cracks! 💥

Day #2 with this JD machine. I’ve seen different versions of this machine. Is this a Feller buncher? I’ve seen the style with the swinging head referred to as a Feller buncher. Same concept —> different attachment? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Today was all gouging. I’m super popular with everyone at the shop that loves wearing ear plugs.

I found a big crack at the rear of the turret. I gouged it out.

Here’s some pics. Detailing in the captions.

This is a good one! 💫

This job will make the top three of my critical repair list.

The other two

- Cracked main beams on a lowboy trailer. Completely rebuilt those.

- A delimber cradle crack that meandered around three sides - clean through 1.5” plate in two locations. That was knarly.

Critical repairs like this are my favorite thing to do. Heavy metal… big consequences. Sign me up. 👋🏻

(I’ll fix your lawn mower too if you want. It’s just not as engaging)
_______

I posted about this job a while ago. I hear there’s six of these machine to do.

The issue is the weld around the turret cracking. The fix is to gouge out the original weld… lay down a bigger weld… and add 3/4” plates all the way around. Fix any cracks you find along the way.

They kicked off the party with the worst one.

Why is it the worst one? The one has been repaired already and the repair failed. There’s more extensive cracking than there would otherwise be and all the added 3/4” plates have to come off to get things back to zero.

Continuing today’s trend of working on things that aren’t Imprezas.

I moved the old f350 out to center stage.
I let it run for a while. It’s running good.

I’ve abandoned the idea of reworking that utility bed. I’m just going to build a basic stake body flatbed with an underbody box or two.

I’m going to go out of my way to get some significant weight onto the rear tires. With no bed I smoke the tires just trying to get up the driveway. (Side note… I really need to lower the tire pressure)

Basic flatbed. Simple headboard. Diamond plate deck. Stake pockets for wood sideboards. Rough cut oak would be nice.

Heavy rear bumper with a trailer hitch. I’m going to overbuild anything behind the rear tires to add weight.

I already have a lot of material to work with. I’m tired of not driving this truck around.

Look what came back… 🤗

This will be a really fun project.

Back when I first put the SAM on the big truck I didn’t have a use for the trailer it had been mounted to.

Well…. Now I certainly do have a use for that trailer and the gentleman was kind enough to give the trailer back to me.

I finally broke down and bought a pintle hitch… went and picked the trailer up this morning.

I’m am going to have a great time getting everything prettied up. I’m going to fix the trailer up nice with whatever metal work it needs, new boards, and new lights. Then the SAM will get some attention… fresh paint and I’ll put the hard doors back on.

I’m undecided whether I’ll mount the SAM forward or rear facing on the trailer. I do think I’ll add a good box for some leads vs any type of lead rack.

No serious inquiries on the marketplace ad for this machine. I took the ad down. I may re-list it when I’m finished with this little project.

Side note —> once it’s on the trailer and registered? If anyone needs a machine that’ll gouge all day - all week? Looking to run 3/32 fluxcore wire? I would loan this machine out. It’s doesn’t miss a beat doing heavy work….No need to worry… You can’t hurt it.

Here’s some pics. Cold start video of the SAM in the comments.

Have a great day!

I finally got it.

The Impreza is back on the road. It has consumed a lot of my time. I’ll get back to welding stuff soon.

I went on a road trip to Vermont yesterday and bought a different engine. I put that engine in today.

I spoke with the shop owner about the other engine. He acknowledges that something went wrong with the timing. He sent that engine out to a different shop that does lots of Subaru boxer engines. That shop is going to get it back to 100% at no cost to me, whatever it needs.

Now I’ll have an extra engine.

______

There’s a couple small jobs to take care of in the near future and phase 2 at the transfer station is coming up soon.

With the Impreza out of the way I hope to put some time into upkeep on the big truck…. body work, paint, some mechanical stuff.

______

Here’s some pictures of where my time and effort has been going lately.

I know y’all are dying to hear about the 2014 Impreza engine right?

Well…. You’re gonna.

The timing is… in a word… completely fu**ed.

I’ll post a video in the comments.

Every sound you hear in the video, other than the ratchet I’m using —> is coming directly from the passenger side valve train.
