Born with congenital hearing loss, Timothy received MED-EL cochlear implants at 7 months old.

Shortly after activation, he discovered the piano and has loved banging on the keys ever since. 🎹

Timothy's mother, CiCi, says, "He has loved banging on the piano since the day after his activation, although attempting to eat the sheet music has taken up more of his energies of late." 😂

To conclude Audiology Awareness Month, we’re shining a spotlight on Dr. Hannah Dearth at Johnson Audiology in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

For Dr. Dearth, the most rewarding part of being an audiologist is helping patients reconnect with their friends and family.

According to the CDC, approximately 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 infants that undergo a newborn hearing screening have a detectable level of hearing loss.

For those diagnosed with more profound hearing loss, a cochlear implant may be the suggested solution.

MED-EL's latest FDA approval allows children as young as seven months to be implanted with our hearing devices.

"Children who have their cochlear implants activated before 9 months achieve auditory and receptive language skills that mirror their typically hearing peers," said Dr. Samantha Scharf, an audiologist at UNC Health.

: Meet Hearpeers Mentor Mary Beth!

Mary Beth began losing her hearing at age 13 due to otosclerosis. By her mid-twenties, she had lost hearing in her right ear following surgery for Ménière’s disease and continued to lose hearing in her left ear. This led her to the decision to get a cochlear implant.

Once activated, Mary Beth practiced listening every day and couldn't wait to discover the new sounds she would hear.

As a mentor, Mary Beth hopes to pay it forward and be a helping hand in people's hearing journeys.

"These CIs have been life-changing for me, just absolutely amazing. I volunteer to help others on their hearing journeys, pay it forward, and honor those who came before me and helped give me this gift of hearing," she said.

We're so grateful to have Mary Beth as a mentor. 🫶
