Radiation therapy is a cornerstone of breast cancer care. When treatment involves the chest, caring for the whole patient also means considering the lungs.

Treatment planning aims to effectively treat the target while limiting exposure to nearby healthy tissue. Regional lung function adds another perspective by showing that not every part of the lung functions the same way.

Xenon MRI visualizes where lung ventilation is preserved or impaired, providing a regional view of lung function without ionizing radiation.

Why seeing mucus plugs matters in severe asthma 🫁

A recent review paper in Respiratory Research nicely elucidates that biologic therapy can reduce occlusive mucus plugs and improve functional outcomes, including ventilation defects measured by MRI.

Structural imaging with CT can identify the obstruction and Xenon MRI can determine the functional consequences of the mucus plug. It also can show where residual plugs remain after treatment. Xenon MRI offers noninvasive, radiation-free insight into regional lung function — supporting precise, personalized asthma care.
