LightSpeed Lift

LightSpeed Lift The LightSpeed is a Body Weight Support System developed for physical rehabilitation and athletic training.

The LightSpeed is designed to work with existing treadmills and allows for a controlled body weight lift of up to 60 pounds. The LightSpeed Bodyweight Support System started with a neck injury and a boat winch. Eighteen years ago, a friend of physical therapist Malcolm Macaulay came for physical therapy after a severe neck injury. Even at that early date, Macaulay had read about bodyweight support

systems in professional journals. The neck injury even as it healed was aggravated by his friends’ greatest love, running. The impact of running caused the pain to resonate in his arm with each step. Lessening the impact by Bodyweight Support made theoretical sense.

“We actually built a very crude version with a boat winch going up and over a treadmill, [and] hooked up a fish scale to a traction harness,” Macaulay says. “When that worked, we devised a study.”

He got 18 of the best runners from around the region to sign on, running on a treadmill with a bodyweight support system to see how it affected their running. Runners said the system allowed them to run faster and further without injury, which helped both in rehabilitation and developing top speed. Three years ago, he started to seriously consider bringing the product to market. He experimented with different shorts and harnesses until coming up with the present setup. Now, a simple frame around the treadmill, a pair of compression shorts, and a couple of rubber bands are all anyone needs to get running again.

“In the health care system these days you don’t get to keep them very long,” Macaulay says. “The mission has been to make it accessible to people.”

“I like that it feels very natural and even though you are strapped in you still feel like you can have a similar running form to that of running outside or on a normal treadmill.

I really enjoy still being able to sweat and feel like I am training even during periods of injury. It helps me to return to running in a safe way! I think the convenience of having it at home is also huge, especially now being a new mom!” - Jordan Hogan

“On the recommendation of Nike teammate Galen Rupp, Jordan reached out for a LightSpeed Lift system in November of 2018 as she was recovering from a foot injury. Meeting her for the first time in her garage gym and seeing her smile as she experienced the “real run feel” of LightSpeed remains a highlight memory for me. She recovered quite well and placed 3rd at Boston in 2019.

In 2024 we reconnected as she was transitioning into coaching and motherhood. Using the LIghtSpeed Lift system during her pregnancy and most importantly post Partum helped her to not only keep and regain her step but also to retain the delightful smile that has been a trademark throughout her career. LightSpeed Lift is proud to be part of her program. We look forward to working with her and many of her crew for years to come. Fresh legs are happy legs!”- Malcolm Macaulay, LightSpeed Lift Founder

Meet Morgan McDonald (CHICKENBOYMORGS), a two-time Olympian for Australia (2020, 2024 Track & Field) who has represented his country at the World Athletics Championships in 2017, 2019, and 2023. A four-time NCAA Champion at the University of Wisconsin, he also co-hosts the Coffee Club podcast alongside Olli H***e and George Beamish. As one of Australia’s top athletes over the last decade, McDonald is no stranger to American soil. He won multiple Big Ten and NCAA Championship titles while representing the Wisconsin Badgers, including his memorable 2018 NCAA Cross Country title on his home, snow-packed course in Madison, WI. Morgan has recently partnered with LightSpeed Lift as he aims to stay healthy while training as a professional athlete for On Athletics and Australia.

“I love that the LightSpeed Lift is simple to use and feels the most like actual running out of all the “anti gravity” devices (because your hips aren’t locked in).” - Morgan McDonald

“Watching Morgan’s face and body as he experienced the “LightSpeed Lift” for the first time was a delight. Even more inspiring was how he reacted watching Sinta as she ran using the system. He took obvious delight seeing her running with her normal fluid gait while using LightSpeed Lift. I look forward to following his running journey over the next few years.” - Malcolm Macaulay, LightSpeed Lift Founder

“With family ties to Wisconsin Track & Cross Country, I have always admired Morgan McDonald.   My favorite highlight:  Zimmer Cross Country Championship Course, November 17, 2018.   As McDonald stormed up the final quarter mile incline to the finish in victorious fashion, his determination, grit and character made Badgers everywhere ecstatic.” - Molly Watcke, LightSpeed Lift Sales & Marketing

Mom of two young children and advocate for women, mothers and children. Molly has partnered with LightSpeed Lift during pregnancy and her return to postpartum running.

“I use my LSX-500 when I feel something sore and need to offload a run, or coming back from injury as a safe way to ease into faster paces and longer volume. Most recently I used it while pregnant and it helped me run further through the third trimester when I normally would have had to stop with pain in my hips and back. Also returning to run from pregnancy it has been the most helpful, it offloads the pelvic floor enough to safely get my legs used to running again.” - Molly Huddle

Sinta is an Ethiopian-born Italian professional middle-distance runner. She is coached by Dathan Ritzenhein and training with the OAC Global Team in Boulder, Colorado. “What I love most is that it allowed me to go from not running at all to being fully back again. It supported both my body and my mindset during recovery, especially with the different body-weight support options and the progressive return to running.” - Sintayehu Vissa

Meet Roisin Willis!

In 2025, Willis capped off her remarkable collegiate career with back-to-back titles at the NCAA and U.S. Outdoor National Championships (800m). Following her senior debut at the World Championships in Tokyo, Roisin signed a professional contract with New Balance and trains with their team in Boston. Roisin’s debut as a pro has been nothing short of exceptional, including an indoor American record (800m) and a bronze medal in Stockholm, where she recorded a new outdoor PB.

“I love that the design does not interfere with my running form and it is super user friendly!” - Roisin Willis

“Eight years ago, when I delivered a LightSpeed system to Roisin’s mother, Breeda Willis, she mentioned she would use it for her 12-year-old daughter who “showed potential.” I remember thinking at the time “sure” many parents feel that way about their children, but Roisin has proven to be exceptional. As she rose to prominence in her mid-teens, Breeda told me that a major factor in Roisin’s success was using LightSpeed for a significant portion of her training to keep her legs fresh and fast. Her use of the system continued at Stanford, and now the New Balance facility in Boston has a LightSpeed Lift being used by Roisin and her teammates. Throughout her career, Roisin has maintained a focused, positive, and humble approach. Knowing her is a gift.” - Malcolm Macaulay, LightSpeed Lift Founder

Meet Ali Ince!

“I love that the LightSpeed offloads weight, but also allows you to still keep a normal running stride and pattern. It feels very natural. It is a great tool for injury, but it can also be used for high-intensity training. It allows the body and legs to reach a faster leg rate turnover more easily without a huge cardio strain. This primes the body for reaching faster paces on the track!” - Ali Ince

Breeda Willis, one of Ali’s coaches, recommended the system to support her endurance and prevent injuries while she was balancing basketball, cross country, and track. We reconnected in 2024 during a publicity photo session with other LightSpeed Lift influencers, including Gary Martin, Star Price, and Bob Liking. It has been wonderful to see Ali’s success through high school and college, and I look forward to watching her compete in her third year with the Oregon Ducks.” - Malcolm Macaulay, LightSpeed Lift Founder
