Derating protects a component from overheating. It also means the component isn't performing the way it's supposed to.

For ECUs, ADAS cameras, and other automotive electronics packed into confined spaces, that tradeoff plays out constantly, especially after a hot soak, when temperatures keep climbing even with the system powered down. Predicting when and where that happens is a transient problem, not a steady-state one.

A cabin can hit its temperature setpoint and still feel cold.

Cold hands on a cold steering wheel. A draft from the vents. Feet that stay chilled long after the air has warmed up. None of that registers on a thermostat, but all of it shapes whether an occupant is actually comfortable.

Comfort is a multifactorial response. Mean radiant temperature, local skin temperatures, air velocity, humidity, clothing, and metabolic rate all feed into it. Radiant heating works on several of those at once, warming occupants and nearby surfaces directly rather than pushing heated air through the cabin.

Measured thermal IR imagery of adversarial UAVs is hard to come by. Physics-based simulation can fill the gaps.

On August 20, ThermoAnalytics Senior Engineer Mark Klein presents 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗢𝗟𝗢𝟭𝟭 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥-𝗖𝗡𝗡 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖-𝗨𝗔𝗦 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗥 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, an automated approach to supplementing measured datasets with realistic synthetic scenes.

Among the details that make the imagery convincing: modeling batteries, gas engines, and aerodynamic heating as distinct heat sources, capturing the motion blur of spinning propeller blades, and compositing simulated targets directly into measured backgrounds.

The session closes with a look at how well it works, evaluating YOLO11 and Faster R-CNN performance across both real and synthetic test sets.
