Engineering of Brevard, PLLCwas excited to participate in the 2026 Transylvania County Schools S.T.E.A.M Expo. A community-wide celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math that connects classroom learning to real world careers here in Transylvania County.

The event was focused around bringing together students, families, educators, and local businesses to highlight how S.T.E.A.M skills show up in meaningful and exciting ways across our community.

We had a great time interacting with local students about 'Engineering in a Small Town' and enjoyed sharing the different ways we contribute to the community around them.

Engineering of Brevard was excited to be a part of bringing life back into this previously run-down building. Originally built and run as a Sonic Restaurant, it was shut down in the 2010’s and had since sat empty. That was until Mountain Bird Chicken was looking for a home and saw potential in this disserted structure.

Mountain Bird has been open since August of this year and it is already an integral part of the Brevard food community. Bringing their own unique spin to the fried chicken scene.

If you haven’t yet stopped by and grabbed a bite to eat, they are all decked out for the Holidays and excited to serve you!

WE ARE LOOKING TO HIRE!!!

Do you or someone you know have an engineering aptitude or Drafting Skills?

We are looking to hire a new Engineering Associate to add to our team. This position is perfect for a young resident of Transylvania County who is ready to start a career in engineering. A college degree is not required, but here are a few things that are:

- High School degree
- Experience & Knowledge drawing/drafting with AutoCAD
- Interest in construction techniques, not just swinging a hammer,
but understanding codes and why we build the way we build.
- Interest in residential, commercial, and industrial design and construction
- Physically able to climb and crawl thru attics and crawlspaces.
- Experience on a construction jobsite is a plus
- Love of Western North Carolina, and desire to have a career here in the mountains.

Engineering Associate is an entry level position in a small but growing Engineering/Design company. We will train and also provide assistance with further education as the Associate works towards a Project Engineer Position.

Where it all started!

Frank Latell sits at the original drafting table he purchased back in 1970 when he first got out of the Navy and was building homes in Florida. In the 80’s he moved his family and the drafting table to Transylvania County where he spent the next 40 years engineering and building homes here in NC. In the early 2000’s, Frank moved back down to Florida to be closer to family and unfortunately the table wasn’t able to make the trip back and was given away to a family friend here in NC.

When Engineering of Brevard recently moved into a new space, we had a large empty spot right in the middle of our office. In a spur of the moment attempt, Scott Latell was able to track down Franks original drafting table after almost 20 years. The table now sits as a central focal point in the office and is used daily.

The first time Frank walked into the new office he was surprised to see a table “much like the one he had back in the day”. He was even more ecstatic when he realized that this was the exact table, he’d spent so many hours working at.

At 90 years old Frank Latell is still an integral part of the Engineering of Brevard Team. He still regularly does many of our larger engineered foundations, structural and retaining wall designs. (Even calling in to check on how we are doing if he hasn’t heard from us in a few days.)

Six months ago, we were hoping for the rain to stop. Now, six months later, to the day, we are asking for the rains to fall and the winds to quit.

We want to send out a huge thank you to all our firefighters, first responders, rescue forest service members, and volunteers that are working tirelessly on the wildfire relief efforts.

We hope everyone is staying safe and being smart.
