We spend a lot of time talking about the architects, designers, builders, and craftsmen who bring beautiful spaces to life. But today, we're turning the spotlight on someone who deserves a little recognition of her own.

The person behind the camera.

There's an art to architectural photography that goes far beyond pointing a camera at a room. It's knowing how to capture the warmth of a space, the play of light and shadow, the richness of natural wood, and those little architectural details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

That's exactly what we love about the work of .

Her photography has a way of making you want to step right into the room and stay awhile.

In fact, we love her work so much that we've selected one of her photographs for the cover of our new Koetter Woodworking millwork catalog!

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗸. 👀

Swipe through these gorgeous spaces and see which photograph made the cover. (Hint: We saved it for last!)

A special shoutout to the talented teams behind these beautiful spaces – builder, Loyd Builders, interior design by Kate Haynes, our dealer partner, ITC Millwork, and the talented team at Envision Millwork, Inc.

Beautiful work, Abbie. And thank you for helping us tell our story so beautifully. 👏

Pull up a chair. Today we're talking pocket doors, and a mistake we see more often than we'd like.

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼.

See that light-colored strip running across the top and down the side of the door? That's raw wood. No stain. No sealer. No finish.

Once that unfinished door disappears into the wall, you've placed raw wood into a cavity surrounded by construction materials that are still releasing moisture.

Framing lumber can contain significantly more moisture than the door. Drywall joint compound releases moisture into the surrounding air as it dries.

And unfinished wood? It's essentially a sponge.

Wood naturally gains and loses moisture as the environment around it changes. When one portion of a door is sealed and another is left exposed, you're giving moisture an open invitation into the wood, creating an imbalance in how that door responds.

And what happens when that door starts absorbing moisture? It can swell, bow, or warp. Suddenly, that beautiful pocket door doesn't slide quite so smoothly. And fixing a door that's tucked inside a wall? Not exactly anyone's idea of a good time.

𝗛𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝟭𝟬𝟭: We can't engineer Mother Nature out of solid wood.

People hear that Hickory is one of the hardest domestic hardwoods and naturally assume that means it won't move. It's going to move. The question is how much.

Hardness measures resistance to denting and wear. Dimensional stability describes how wood responds as it gains and loses moisture. Those are two very different things.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗼𝗿𝘆.

Hickory interior doors and millwork belong in a conditioned environment. HVAC should be operating, wet work should be completely cured, humidity must be controlled, and products need appropriate acclimation.

And bathrooms? We'd think twice, and then think again.

Repeated humidity spikes and Hickory aren't a great combination. If the space can't maintain consistent, controlled humidity, Hickory isn't the species to choose.

These precautions are important when working with any wood species. With Hickory, they're critical.

Still want Hickory?

We’ve seen T&G nickel gap used in a lot of unique ways over the years, but this one will definitely make you stop scrolling!

Fifty-four years is a long time to do business together. And when we look around our operation today, it’s pretty incredible to think that our relationship with WEINIG started with a single moulder in 1972, when Tom Koetter purchased a 12" H30N directly from Germany.

More than five decades later, WEINIG technology can be found throughout our operation, helping us produce millions of feet of moulding each year.

We’re incredibly honored to have been named the recipient of the Why WEINIG Award, the overall honor presented as part of 𝗪𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗚 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝟱𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The machines have changed tremendously since 1972, but some things haven’t.

We still believe in investing for the long term, finding better ways to do what we do, and building relationships that last.

This award represents more than the equipment on our plant floor. It represents 54 years of trust, innovation, friendship, and two companies growing alongside one another.

We’re grateful to the team at WEINIG for the recognition, and incredibly proud of the Koetter team for the part they’ve played in the story along the way.

From the first moulder in 1972 to where we stand today, it’s been quite a journey.

This is how a lot of decisions actually get made on a jobsite.

Not from a screen, but standing in the space with real samples in hand.

That’s exactly why our trim sample boxes exist.

They make it easier to compare profiles, see scale, and make the call 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, instead of guessing.

Great to see putting theirs to work. Huge thanks to for helping get them in their hands! 🙌

If you’d like a sample box for your next project, connect with your Koetter dealer - we’ll take care of the rest!
