Since launching PBSpan (TPEE), the most common question we receive isn’t about performance — it’s about recyclability.

After Shinkong introduced PBSpan, our polyester-based elastic fiber (TPEE), discussions with brands, mills, and downstream partners quickly converged on one technical question:

👉 Can PBSpan realistically enter a Textile-to-Textile (T2T) recycling system in the future?
This question cannot be answered with marketing language.
It must be answered at the material-structure level.
From a structural standpoint, PBSpan clearly sits on the “recyclable side.”
PBSpan is a TPEE (Thermoplastic Polyester Elastomer) with the following composition:
TPA + BDO + PTMEG
This means it is a depolymerizable, polyester-based elastic material, fundamentally different from PU-based spandex.
If a material can be depolymerized, separated, and re-polymerized, recyclability becomes a matter of scale and timing—not feasibility.

👉What is already technically established today

Mechanical recycling is feasible
PBSpan is compatible with PET/PBT systems and does not cause carbonization or equipment blockage typical of PU elastomers.
It fits naturally into mono-material garment strategies.

Chemical recycling of the hard segment is established
TPA and BDO can be recovered via existing polyester depolymerization routes, and this pathway already applies to post-consumer waste.

This means PBSpan already belongs inside the recycling system—not outside of it.

👉What about the soft segment (PTMEG)?

PTMEG is often assumed to be “non-recyclable,” but that assumption is incorrect.
After depolymerization, PTMEG coexists with other recovered components and can, in principle, be separated based on boiling point differences via fractional distillation.
The reason PTMEG is not recovered today is economics, not chemistry:

Current volumes are too small
Recovery infrastructure is not yet justified

👉Why future recovery is not a question of “if,” but “when”

Material industries follow a consistent pattern:

Demand for mono-material systems continues to increase
Elastic fibers must move away from PU structures
Adoption of TPEE will scale accordingly

Once sufficient volume exists:
Recyclers will store depolymerized PTMEG
Accumulate it to economic scale
Recover it through fractional distillation
Reintroduce it into material applications

This is not speculation—it is how every recyclable material has evolved.

👉Engineering conclusion
PU-based spandex: structurally blocks circularity
TPEE (PBSpan): structurally enables it

The recyclability of PBSpan is not a question of belief.
It is the outcome of material structure and industrial scale.

👉The real question is not whether PBSpan will be recyclable — but when full circularity will be realized.

自從推出 PBSpan(TPEE)後,最常被問的不是性能,而是「未來能不能回收?」

新光合纖在推出聚酯系彈性纖維 PBSpan(TPEE) 之後,與品牌、紡織夥伴及下游端的討論,很快就集中到同一個技術核心:

👉 PBSpan 在未來,是否真的具備可落地的回收路徑?
這個問題,不能用行銷語言回答,只能回到材料結構與回收機制本身。
從材料結構來看,PBSpan 站在「可回收的一側」
PBSpan 屬於 TPEE(熱塑性聚酯彈性體),其基本化學組成為:
TPA + BDO + PTMEG
這代表它是一種 可解聚的聚酯系彈性纖維。
只要材料結構允許解聚、分離與再聚合,回收就不是「會不會」,而是「什麼時候」。
這一點,與 PU 型 Spandex 存在根本差異。

現階段已經成立的事實:

物理回收可行
PBSpan 與 PET / PBT 聚酯系統相容,不會產生 PU 系材料常見的焦化與設備堵塞問題,可納入 mono-material 成衣設計。

化學回收的硬鏈段已成立
TPA / BDO 可透過既有聚酯解聚流程回收,且已能處理 post-consumer waste。

這代表 PBSpan 已經在回收體系內,而不是體系外。

那最常被問到的「軟鏈段(PTMEG)」呢?

很多人以為 PTMEG 不能回收,但實際情況是:
👉 不是不能,而是目前「還沒有回收的經濟誘因」。
在化學解聚後,PTMEG 與其他單體共存於回收物流中,
可依沸點差異,透過 分餾(fractional distillation) 進行分離。

現階段未回收,唯一原因是量體尚小。

為什麼可以非常確定:未來一定能回收?
因為材料產業的演進邏輯非常清楚:
單一材質(mono-material)需求持續上升
彈性纖維勢必逐步離開 PU 結構
TPEE 的使用量只會增加,不會減少

當回收量體出現:
回收商會先儲存解聚後的 PTMEG
累積至經濟規模後進行分餾與純化
軟鏈段自然回到材料循環體系
這不是假設,而是所有可回收材料都走過的標準路徑。

結論
PU 型 Spandex:結構性阻斷回收
TPEE(PBSpan):結構上必然可回收
