A couple of months back, we held training on Flyability's Elios 3 drone with the Sing Swee Bee Group (SSB) team.

SSB often carries out maintenance works on LNG vessels. The airtight chambers inside are hard to reach and the usual/traditional approach was using scaffold. Now with the Elios 3, they can fly the drone instead.

Our operation team worked with SSB’s staff on the flight controls and how the Elios 3 behaves in tight and enclosed spaces. We then moved on to flying, so the team could practise positioning it close to the surfaces they need to check.

Less scaffold and fewer people working in confined spaces means a safer and faster job for each test. Thank you to the SSB team for their time and questions throughout the session!

How do you measure the volumetric quantity of cement stockpile in a silo without sending anyone in?

Our VISCOY field operations team carried out a proof-of-concept (POC) mission at a cement plant in Brunei, and our goal was to find out if Flyability's Elios 3 Drone with the Surveying Payload could measure the volume of cement in one of the client’s silos.

We did two LiDAR scans, one with the silo empty and one with it filled. Each scan took under an hour, with the whole field deployment taking less than half a day, and post-flight processing under two hours. Now that we have the empty silo recorded as a baseline, future measurements will only need a single scan.

How do you find a radioactive source without walking into the area it's contaminating?

Most radiation detection instruments are handheld, which means operators have to enter areas with elevated radiation levels to locate a source or leak. We recently showed what the alternative looks like, using Flyability’s Elios 3 drone with its radiation (RAD) payload.

For this proof of concept, the Elios 3 drone was deployed at a safe distance from the radiation source. Our drone pilot then flew a carpet scanning pattern near the roof to cover the entire warehouse. As it flew, the RAD payload gave the operator real-time readings of radiation levels and accumulated dose, while the onboard LiDAR built a 3D map of the space. The flight path was colour-coded by radiation level and it was easy to pinpoint exactly where the source was sitting. Once located, the Elios 3 drone descended to visually confirm it in a warehouse packed with goods and equipment.

Note: This was a proof-of-concept (POC) conducted in a controlled workshop environment. Special approval was granted by NEA for a licensed operator to operate a live radiation source.

Taking confined space inspection further with the Elios 3 drone!

We recently worked with TSM C&S Consultants Pte Ltd on a proof of concept exploring how Flyability's Elios 3 drone could be used to visually inspect double slab chambers along the Kallang–Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel in Singapore.

Previously, man-entry inspection could only be carried out up to the second chamber, as oxygen levels beyond that point made it unsafe for personnel to continue on foot.

This inspection came with its own set of challenges. Each chamber connects through an opening in 200mm thick concrete walls, and these openings weren't aligned with each other, making radio-frequency signal connectivity tricky as the drone moved from chamber to chamber. On top of that, the whole operation had to be carried out during a short overnight road closure, alongside other ongoing maintenance works.

Even with these constraints, the Elios 3 drone pushed through 6 chambers, reaching more than 10 metres from the entry point.

Big mapping operation completed at the Singapore Indoor Stadium using Flyability's Elios 3 drone earlier this year!

Our team (Ilham and Chao Sheng) flew the Elios 3 drone through the entire stadium, mapping progressively from ground level up along the full circumference of the space. This covered the central court, seating areas, walkways, concourse and even the ceiling structure, all captured as LiDAR data in a fully GPS-denied indoor environment.

Each flight was localised against established SVY21 reference points, allowing us to stitch the individual datasets together into a single, complete point cloud referenced to the SVY21 coordinate system (Singapore's national standard plane coordinate system). On top of the mapping, we also tested the Elios 3's ability to extract real dimensions from the resulting point cloud, measuring the diameter of one of the stadium's roof trusses directly from the scan data.

This operation is a strong showcase of how the Elios 3 drone can be deployed for large-scale indoor 3D mapping, combining GPS-denied flight capability with precise localisation through GNSS/RTK control points and reflective targets.

Wrapped up 3 days at the recent BEX Asia (The Built Environment Expo) 2026, held at Marina Bay Sands from 2 to 4 September!

BEX Asia brings together the built environment community from across Asia to look at what's next in construction, digitalisation and sustainable building. Our field engineers, Zan Xuan and Ilham, just wrapped training on Guideline Geo MALÅ Easy Locator Core, the new AI-powered ground penetrating radar system for utility locating and underground mapping.

The team got hands-on with real-time interpretation support from MALÅ AI, wireless data collection through the MALÅ Controller App, and cloud-based processing with MALÅ Vision, all built to speed up how underground utilities get located, marked out, and mapped on site.
