The EU’s new Air Quality Directive 2024/2881 comes into force by the end of 2026. It contains many new provisions compared to the directives it replaces. Among other things, it introduces new and stricter air quality standards that must be met by 2030. However, to achieve this, work under the new directive will need to begin as early as the start of 2027. Why are we monitoring ozone?

Ozone can protect life on earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but it is also a harmful air pollutant that can affect human health, crops, and forests. As ozone can be transported over long distances, elevated concentrations may occur even far from apparent sources of air pollution. Monitoring ozone therefore helps us understand air quality, assess levels against air-quality targets, and provide timely information when concentrations become a concern.
