Today SWEACC joined a Kenyan delegation to visit Norrsken in Stockhom. Their co-CEO Sara Kappelmark welcomed us and gave a presentation about Norrsken work and achievements. The Kenyan group was led by Michael Sali Mandu who are the Acting Secretary for Trade in the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry in Kenya.

Norrsken plan to soon open the door to Norrsken Nairobi and for all you are living in Kenya, or neighbouring countries, search for Norrsken Kigali and see all the good work Norrsken has done in Rwanda. Now that is coming to Kenya and Nairobi.

The fund Norrsken22 already have done 15 investment in Kenya, all together 54 in Africa. Norrsken22 is a technology growth fund, backed by many unicorn founders in the tech industry. We expect so see much more as Kenya is also a much better consumter market then Rwanda today. I am sure some of the new companies can be so called "Born Globals". We here at SWEACC look forward working with Norrsken in both Sweden and East Africa.

Today SWEACC attended Kenya-Sweden Business Dialogue at Kenya House outside Stockholm as a Kenyan Business Delegation are visiting Stockholm for some Joint Trade Committee talks between Kenya and Sweden. This committee was created as part of an MoU Sweden wrote with Kenya in 2022, last and first meeting was in Nairobi in 2024 that SWEACC attended tomorrow will be second and a follow up. We attended today on the invitation of Ambassador Angeline Musili representing Kenya here in the Nordics.

Most of the talks today was about agricultural opportunities but also hurdles and bottle necks that we have identified in earlier meetings and workshops. Digital solutions and other technology innovations from Sweden can also be suitable for Kenya and the agricultural sector. Main issues are how to handle the market gap between a farmer and producer in Kenya, and an importer and consumer in Sweden. How Kenyan farmers and Cooperative can move up the value chain. That work is ahead of us. We think the diaspora can be an important resource in that work to engage Swedish and European buyers and consumers for Kenyan goods. Tomorrow, after they have other meetings, we hope to show Norrsken to the Kenyan delegation for future impact investment in Kenya.

Party time in Addis Ababa - 80 Years of Sweden–Ethiopia Relations: Building the Next Chapter

SWEACC was pleased to be represented at the celebration of 80 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Ethiopia, hosted by the Embassy of Sweden in Addis Ababa yesterday.

The event brought together representatives from government, business and civil society, highlighting the longstanding relationship between the two countries and the opportunities ahead.

As Sweden and Ethiopia mark this important milestone, it is also an opportunity to look towards the future of bilateral relations.

Building on decades of development cooperation and strong diplomatic ties, there is significant potential to deepen economic engagement through increased trade, investment, private sector collaboration and knowledge exchange.

At SWEACC, we believe that stronger business-to-business connections are key to unlocking this potential.

Our focus is on creating practical opportunities for Swedish and Ethiopian companies to connect, explore new markets, exchange expertise and develop long-term commercial partnerships.

With Ethiopia’s growing market opportunities and Sweden’s strengths in innovation, technology and sustainable solutions, there is considerable scope for mutually beneficial cooperation.

We extend our appreciation to the Embassy of Sweden for bringing together stakeholders to celebrate this important milestone.

As Chair for SWEACC I was invited this evening to attend the opening of Kongo Groove Festival that will take place this week in Stockholm, first of its kind but we hope an annual event from now on. This will be a week of culture, music and much more, check out their website https://kongogroovefestival.com/.

Nice to learn more about Congolese music, culture and meet Ambassador Léopold Bompese Lofemb representing DRC again as well meeting Ambassador Noureldaime Abdelgadir from the Embassy of the Sudan. We talked both about Culture and Agricultural business and that discussion will continue.

We will discuss more about creative business inside SWEACC and I think the diaspora is important for the success of such new partnerships. For sure we could see more export of East African music, film and food products to Sweden and rest of Nordic, but maybe also IT/Gaming partnerships. As Chair for SWEACC I had a great lunch today with Ambassador Swahiba Mndeme, representing Tanzania in the Nordic countries. She was joined by Minister Aloyce Kway, that will work with trade issues at the Tanzania Embassy in Stockholm. This was a social lunch to get to know each other better. We talked about mutual friends and contacts, Agricultural, Transport, Healthcare and many other important business sectors.

The Swedish Government has phase out most of its bilateral development cooperation strategy for Tanzania but that does not mean business and private sector partnership have or will ended. Tanzania was actually Swedens best export market last year in East Africa with some 660 million SEK in export, followed by DRC and Kenya on 3rd place. Our import from Tanzania was not that much, only 125 million SEK so a lot can improve for trading.

We look forward working with Ambassador Swahiba Mndeme and the new team for business and partnership between Sweden and Tanzania. For example, our member LM International are involved in the upcoming Tanzania Digital Health and Innovation Forum in Dar es Salaam next month, and we have other members involved in infrastructure and energy. Tourism is also important as many Swedish are curios to visit East Africa for that African experience and then we have the agricultural sector. We need to work harder to find ways for more agri business with Tanzania, this will be a topic to continue talk about.

SWEACC has just concluded its participation in the Uganda-EU Business Forum, which proved to be a great success in terms of networking with business communities in Uganda. We are returning to Sweden with numerous expressions of interest, as well as invitations to meetings and collaborations with other chambers of commerce, aimed at fostering business and partnerships between Europe and Uganda (and the wider East Africa region).

Moving forward, SWEACC will further develop its role within Uganda’s broader private-sector ecosystem. We see significant business opportunities for Swedish companies in Uganda and East Africa, particularly in the fields of renewable energy and other sustainable business sectors.

Today SWEACC had a courtesy call from our new member Niyaah Digital Healthcare. This is a Somalia startup focus on mental health in East Africa. Niyaah is group of young talents from Sweden, Kenya and Somalia that want to work with mental health in East Africa. The focus is digital health solutions, but it will also include face to face meetings.

Approximately 15% to 25% of the East African population experiences mental health challenges. The figure for Sweden can be higher, but it all depends on what you consider mental health issues. For example, nearly 12% of the population in Sweden (over 1.2 million patients) were prescribed antidepressants last year.

In East Africa the healthcare sector is underfunded, and for mental health there are stigma and cultural beliefs issues and because of conflict and war, many are refugees and displaces people with different trauma. Niyaah is in very early stage but now the team are working on pilot testing and will seek grants or different early stage funding to move forward.
